On the Nature of cryptozoology and Science Ben S. Roesch. Is cryptozoologya science? This question that has long been debated
http://217.206.205.125/exclusive/cryptoscience.shtml
On the Nature of Cryptozoology and Science Ben S. Roesch I Fortean Times 128 , Loren Coleman criticized some of my arguments to this regard. I would like to take this opportunity to expound on these arguments, and respond to some of Coleman's criticisms. T he "old view" of science to which Coleman sees me cling – a view apparently "discarded by historians and philosophers of science decades ago" – is nothing less than the scientific method. Science has and will always require solid falsifiable hypotheses, experimental work, systematically gathered evidence, and rational deduction and induction. This approach is very much alive, and a glance at any scientific journal will show it is still of paramount importance. To suggest that the scientific method is out of date, but still defend cryptozoology as a science, makes little sense. P lainly, cryptozoology doesn't live up to the scientific method. Science relies heavily on falsifiable hypotheses – hypotheses that can be tested and potentially shown to be false. If alternative hypotheses are suggested and revealed to be false through experimental research, then the original hypothesis is strengthened. When trying to incorporate falsifiable hypotheses, cryptozoologists run into problems. Seemingly testable hypotheses such as "bigfoot exists" or "if the Loch Ness monster exists, we can find it" are too general and too weak to provide a testable and falsifiable base. For example, there is good evidence showing that the giant shark

"Cryptozoology," of course, was coined by Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans in his personal correspondence among colleagues in the 1950s, after the 1955 French publication of his book On the Track of Unknown Animals. The first published use of the word "cryptozoology" was in 1959 when a book by Lucien Blancou was dedicated to "Bernard Heuvelmans, master of cryptozoology." Since 1982, Bernard Heuvelmans has written extensively in the journal Cryptozoology on his current thoughts defining and redefining "cryptozoology."
Meanwhile, ISC's Vice President Dr. Roy Mackal has written: "...the term 'cryptozoology' seems to me particularly appropriate, coming as it does from the Greek work *kryptos*, meaning 'hidden.' 'unknown,' 'secret,' 'enigmatic,' 'mysterious'; hence literally the study of hidden animals".
Dr. Karl Shuker has noted that "cryptozoology" is "literally translated as 'the study of hidden life'', perhaps thus too broadly encompassing plants and other nonanimal forms.

That's easy. Say you want to turn lead into gold well, who's stopping you? Knock yourself out. But perhaps years of lonely, fruitless research are not enough maybe you also want to be taken seriously. That's different. For that, you need a good name. Lead into gold? That would be the ancient and very august-sounding science of alchemy. Personality typing through analysis of head-bumps? Not quackery, my ignorant friend phrenology. Now comes perhaps the cleverest tag of all: cryptozoology. It refers to the search for new animals, animals dwelling in unexpected places, and most importantly for "X-Files" scriptwriters, "cryptids" legendary creatures such as the yeti. As Loren Coleman and Jerome Clark argue in their new book, "Cryptozoology A to Z," there are, obviously, undiscovered creatures on this planet. Surely the search for them is a legitimate scientific pursuit?

Cryptozoology
Cryptozoology is the scientific study of hidden animals. That includes Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, and Chupacabra. Do these things really exist? Bigfoot and "Nessie" have been well documented, with pictures and audio recordings. The hunt is still on to find proof that Bigfoot exists. Native Americans have reported sitings back when they were the only ones in the US. For Nessie there have been over 3000 recorded sightings of the celebrity monster. 3000 sightings must mean there is something there but why can't we find "her". Please explore these links and make your own decision if these "animals" exist or not.

Tabloid journalism created a pattern that has driven the entire subject of these creatures into disrepute. This website attempts to offer relevant data in an effort to inform and perhaps educate. Several pertinent factors regarding our orientation should be mentioned."

Over 100 such still-undiscovered forms have been reported at one time or another somewhere on our planet. Some, like the Loch Ness Monster, are well-known and famous; others are more obscure, and may be of small size, but are no less potentially important to zoology."

Cryptozoology - Sea Creatures
In our vast oceans, there are still possibly many creatures yet to be discovered. Often, unknown sea creatures are labeled "sea monsters" and "sea serpents" when there may actually be a plausible (or not so plausible) explanation for what they are. Cryptozoology, the study of animals which do not exist according to science, attempts to make sense of some of these legendary sea creatures.

99. What Is Cryptozoology?
cryptozoology is the science of monsters. The Florida Skunk Ape unknownmonsters cryptozoologists study. What is cryptozoology?
http://wawa.essortment.com/whatiscryptozo_runh.htm
What is cryptozoology?
The problem with cryptozoology is that most “legitimate” scientists don’t take it very seriously. And the public’s concept of a cryptozoologist is a half-crazed, wild-eyed dreamer chasing the impossible. Creatures like Bigfoot, the Florida Skunk Ape, the Loch Ness Monster, and other bizarre creatures are certainly lively grist for the tabloid mill. Hardly a week goes by without a front page story emblazed across a supermarket tabloid announcing that so-and-so was kidnapped by a Sasquatch and was privileged to witness first hand the family life of these elusive creatures. And therein lies the rub. bodyOffer(20895) Like UFO abductions, encounters with unknown beasts are usually taken with a grain of salt reports from ‘The Twilight Zone”. Cryptozoologists, however, are deadly serious about their monsters. The possibility that such creatures may exist no matter how fantastic they may be fires their inquiring natures. Cryptozoology is the study of “hidden animals”. New species of life are found nearly every day by scientists, but cryptozoology focuses on large varieties like sea serpents and ape-like bipeds. The problem for the cryptozoologist is, other than general skepticism by the general public, is that details of many of these creatures are shrouded in folklore. Take for example the Florida Spunk Ape, an obvious cousin of Bigfoot. People call it a "skunk ape" for the simple reason that it's accompanied by an aroma that smells like a mixture of skunk spray, rotten eggs, and cow manure. It is a huge beast, described as being seven feet tall, weighing in at around 300 pounds, with dark-colored fur. It lumbers through the Everglades and is seldom seen by humans. When it does make an infrequent appearance, however, it creates quite a stir.
