Mike Howard JMichaelH@aol.com Darcy Howard DHoward954@aol.com Mike has been a mineral collector for over 30 years, the last 22 of which he has been employeed by the Arkansas Geological Commission as a geologist. Intrigued by crystal forms and how they relate to minerals and the stories they tell about mineral formation, he is most interested in crystallized specimens, particularly from Arkansas. He has worked on a variety of mineral-related projects in the state and especially enjoys leading field trips for college mineralogy classes to his favorite collecting spot Magnet Cove. Darcy is a scientific illustrator and commercial artist. Specializing in airbrush technique, she also works in electronic and traditional media. Darcy studied art and medicine, and is associated with geology by marriage. A former employee of both the medical profession and state government, she is now a freelance work-at-home mom who designs and produces the Geology Collector's Series T Shirts under the

Aims and Scope: Crystallography Reviews
publishes English language reviews on topics in crystallography and crystal growth, covering all theoretical and applied aspects of biological, chemical, industrial, mineralogical and physical crystallography. The intended readership is the crystallographic community at large, as well as scientists working in related fields of interest. It is hoped that the articles will be accessible to all these, and not just to specialists in each topic.

Acquisition of a Bruker SMART 1000 CCD was made possible through the generosity of the Welch Foundation and Rice University. User Groups
  • A primary group of users are research oriented faculty, post doctoral fellows, and graduate students.
    • The Rice instrument can enhance the use of crystallography in many research programs by enabling data collection on samples that are too small, weak, or unstable. This category includes chemists at Texas Tech, TCU, SMU, UTEP, and UTA. For scientists who have had regular access to X-ray capabilities, the Rice facility can be the primary source of data. Users in this group include UNT and UTD.

Crystallography and Minerals Arranged by Crystal Form The Crystallography section in the Mineralogy Database is moving to a new, permanent domain. Please make sure to bookmark the new location at http://webmineral.com/crystall.shtml Crystal Groups and Classes - Crystallography groups are composed of 32 classes of symmetry derived from observations of the external crystal form. From these 32 classes, 230 space groups (see Crystallography 101 ) are distinguishable using x-ray analysis. For additional information on crystal systems, please review an excellent on-line treatment of this subject, the Introduction to Crystallography and Mineral Crystal Systems by Mike and Darcy Howard. Example Crystal Morphology - To further illustrate these symmetry elements, the example crystalline forms for each symmetry class were constructed using Faces (version 3.5) by Georges Favreau for older browsers and a JAVA language program called JCrystal by Steffen Weber for the java-capable browsers. The example crystals in each group and class were constructed using the following parameters: Crystallographic axes: a=1, b=1, c=1.

Facilities
The Chemistry Department X-ray Crystallography Lab is located on the ninth floor of the Chevron Science Center. We have a Siemens P3 diffractometer (sealed-tube Mo radiation) which is controlled via Siemens P3/PC software. We are also part-owners of a Rigaku AFC5R (MSC Corp.) diffractometer (Cu rotating anode) which is located in the Biology Department here at Pitt. We are equipped for low-temperature data collection. We use primarily the Siemens SHELXTL package (which we used to produce the pictures on this page and in our gallery ) and the public domain SHELXL-93 for the solution, refinement and visualization of X-ray structures. Other programs we have found useful include Platon from Dr. A.L. Spek
