The United States National Committee for Crystallography (USNCCr) has been established to:
  • promote the advancement of the science of crystallography in the United States and throughout the world.
  • effect appropriate U.S. participation in the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) through the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the National Research Council (NRC), which adheres to the Union on behalf of crystallographers in the United States.
    Functions
    The Committee's primary functions are:
  • to advise the President of the NAS on matters pertaining to U.S. participation in the IUCr.
  • to inform crystallographers in the United States concerning the activities of the IUCr.
  • to nominate to the NRC persons to represent the crystallographers in the United States as delegates to the General Assemblies of the IUCr and other meetings sponsored by the Union.

    Discrete Tomography
    This page addresses the problem of reconstructing polyatomic or monoatomic structures from discrete X-Rays. Tomography is the area of reconstructing objects from projections. In discrete tomography , an object T we wish to reconstruct is a set of cells of a multidimensional grid. We perform measurements of T , each one involving a projection that determines the number of cells in T on all lines parallel to the projection's direction. Given a finite number of such measurements, we wish to reconstruct T or, if unique reconstruction is not possible, to compute any object consistent with these projections.

    Who We Are
    The Service Crystallography Special Interest Group was formed to provide a forum for professional service crystallographers. The membership serves in both academia and industry and consists of both small-molecule and macromolecular crystallographers. Membership is open to any ACA member who wishes to join.
    What We Do.... audio
    Much of our fun takes place at the national meeting of the American Crystallographic Association . The next ACA Meeting will take place in San Antonio, Texas from May 25 to May 30, 2002. A primary meeting activity of the SIG is the sponsoring of scientific sessions of special interest to service crystallographers. Sessions sponsored by the Service SIG this year include "Computer and Network Security" (Paul Boyle and John Bollinger, organizers) nad "Authorship Issues" (an evening session organized by Larry Falvello). Sessions for last year's meeting which were sponsored by the Service Crystallography SIG were "Area Detectors, Expanded Capabilities and New Limitations" (organized by John Huffman and Don Ward), "Structure Validation," (Curt Haltiwanger and Ton Spek, organizers), and "Diffraction Methods in Undergraduate Education," (chaired by Allen Hunter).     We are a six year old group in the Structural Biology and Bioinformatics Program , one of four basic science programs within the Kimmel Cancer Center , a National Cancer Institute -designated research and clinical cancer center located at Thomas Jefferson University in center city Philadelphia. Our laboratory works on the functions of Hint Fhit and Aprataxin, members of the Histidine Triad (HIT) superfamily of nucleotide-binding proteins, their homologs, and their signaling partners. Much of our attention is focused on dissecting the cellular pathway by which Fhit induces apoptosis and suppresses tumor formation in animals and the roles of the recently discovered Nit proteins in this pathway. We are also focusing on the two types of Hint proteins, one of which is mutated in ataxia with oculomotor apraxia, which is one of the most common of the recessive autosomal neurodegenerative diseases. It is fortunate that each of the three main branches of histidine triad proteins has a unique yeast homolog and that our laboratory has knockouts and expression constructs to study each one. Our principle tools are enzymology, X-ray crystallography and yeast genetics but we are committed to do what ever experiments are necessary to understand cellular function. Our work is funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute.

    The University of Glasgow has a long tradition in crystallography. From 1942 to 1970 J.M. Robertson held the Gardiner Chair of Chemistry and established Glasgow as a major centre for crystallography. In particular his work on phthalocyanine structures showed how isomorphous replacement could be used to obtain phase information. Robertson established a school of crystallography which was to become world famous where many leading crystallographers obtained their training. In 1989 Neil Isaacs was appointed to the Joseph Black Chair of Protein Crystallography to establish a protein crystallography laboratory which would interact with and support the biological research in the University.     Welcome!
    I started as an assistant professor in August of 2002. My primary research interest is in understanding how biological macromolecules function at the molecular level. I am particularly interested in understanding how the three-dimensional structures of proteins have evolved to act as highly specific and efficient chemical catalysts (enzymes) or binding proteins. My training and previous research have primarily been in molecular biology, protein expression and purification, and X-ray crystallography. I also have a broad-ranging interest and some experience in many other biochemical, biophysical and computational techniques for understanding how enzymes and binding proteins function.
    Research Interests
    My lab will initially focus on two different systems, where past work and existing collaborations have established good starting points for structural and biochemical studies.
  • RNA-dependent RNA Polymerases
    • RNA-dependent RNA polymerases are the central enzymes responsible for replicating the genomes of positive-stranded RNA viruses. Positive-stranded RNA viruses are the cause of many human diseases such as polio, the common cold, hepatitis A, hepatitis C, dengue fever, viral encephalitis (West Nile virus), and viral gastroenteritis (Norwalk virus). Positive-stranded RNA viruses also cause many serious diseases in other animals (for example, foot-and-mouth disease, rabbit hemorrhagic disease, feline calicivirus disease, porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome, and equine viral arteritis) and plants (for example, plum pox, barley yellow disease, potato virus Y).
