Introduction to CAM
This is an update on CAM, the Cultural Anthropology Methods Journal. The editors of CAM are H. Russell Bernard, Stephen Borgatti, Pertti Pelto, and Oswald Werner. Beginning its eighth year, CAM publishes articles on the real "how to" of qualitative and quantitative research methods articles on how to:
  • manage field notes and other texts using specialized software
  • automate the coding of open-ended interviews
  • draw random samples under field conditions
  • do pile pile sorts by telephone
  • interpret the output of multidimensional scaling programs
  • choose ethnographic informants
  • build dictionaries and genealogies by computer in the field
  • run inexpensive stat programs for analysis in the field
  • use electronic mail
  • do on-line bibliographic searches
  • submit grant proposals
  • write an effective book prospectus
CAM also publishes reviews of software of interest to all field researchers in the social sciences. CAM is read in 12 countries. CAM costs $15.00 USC per year, including postage in the U.S., for three issues. The price is the same for individuals and libraries. In Canada and Mexico, add $3.00 postage. Real Solutions for Real Problems
Staff Philosophy
The complexity of social interactions, caused by increased inter-cultural and cross-cultural engagements, requires new and innovative strategies for program development and technology transfer. Organizations need additional ideas, expertise and experienced personnel to increase their prospects for success in designing strategies for reaching multi-cultural populations. The staff of the ACARC use applied holistic approach to resolve issues caused by misunderstandings resulting from differences in cultural communication and behavior.
Anthropologists study the differences and similarities, both biological and cultural, in human populations in all periods, and in all parts of the world. Few, if any, other professional or academic approaches offer a comprehensive examination, understanding and methodology to address social issues and human diversity questions. Anthropologists have provided solutions for improving people's lives, and have participated in monitoring the activities of others, e.g., analyzing program interventions; analyzing environmental constraints, both social and biological; examining political structures, economic or subsistence influences; religious constraints, or external influences. While the foundation model used derives from anthropology, specialists from a wide variety of disciplines will be brought together, as necessary, to make the Center's activities holistic.

In Encyclopedia of Cultural Anthropolog y, David Levinson and Melvin Ember, editors. New York: Henry Holt and Company, vol. 4:1345-1351. VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY Visual anthropology logically proceeds from the belief that culture is manifested through visible symbols embedded in gestures, ceremonies, rituals, and artifacts situated in constructed and natural environments. Culture is conceived of as manifesting itself in scripts with plots involving actors and actresses with lines, costumes, props, and settings. The cultural self is the sum of the scenarios in which one participates. If one can see culture, then researchers should be able to employ audiovisual technologies to record it as data amenable to analysis and presentation. Although the origins of visual anthropology are to be found historically in positivist assumptions that an objective reality is observable, most contemporary culture theorists emphasize the socially constructed nature of cultural reality and the tentative nature of our understanding of any culture. There is an obvious relationship between the supposition that culture is objectively observable and the popular belief in the neutrality, transparency, and objectivity of audiovisual technologies. From a positivist perspective, reality can be captured on film without the limitations of human consciousness Pictures provide an unimpeachable witness and: source of highly reliable data. Given those assumptions, it is logical that as soon as the technologies were available, anthropologists attempted to produce wit] the camera the sort of objective research data the could tee stored in archives and made available for stud by future generations (Edwards 1992).

Cultural Anthropology at the University of Hawai'i
Cultural Anthropology is the study of human nature as it is expressed in all its variations. The field is based on field work in contemporary societies (ethnography) and the comparison of societies past and present (ethnology). While a multitude of theoretical approaches are current in cultural anthropology, our Department espouses no orthodoxy and students are encouraged to develop their own theoretical interests. Although students in virtually all fields of cultural anthropology can be accommodated within the Department, three special programs are Ecological Anthropology and Medical Anthropology , and Discursive Practices , all of which involve collaboration with other disciplines and subdisciplines within anthropology. The faculty specializes in the cultures of Oceania, Southeast and East Asia.
