Undergraduate Research Research My research focuses on physiological ecology and behavior of reptiles and amphibians particularly rattlesnakes and Gila monsters.. Rattlesnake Research Here in central Washington, I am analyzing the physical characteristics of several winter dens used by the Northern Pacific rattlesnake. In addition, I am exploring patterns of variation in energetics, growth rates and demographics among the snake populations inhabiting those dens and using radiotelemetry to monitor activity patterns, thermal biology, and behavior. Gila monster Research In the southwest, I am continuing a long-term study of the Gila monster in the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico with my colleague, Randy Jenning of Western New Mexico University. We are using miniature dataloggers and radiotransmitters to explore the behavioral and physiological consequences of refuge-site selection by these ancient, venomous lizards. I am also working with two other colleagues, Charles H. Lowe and Brent Martin, on writing a book about Gila monsters and beaded lizards.

A large variety of flora, fauna, and microscopic critters and growths all adapted to the harsh life of the desert and all functioning together to aid in each other's survival. Saguaros and other large cacti of the Sonoran desert develop only slowly from seeds - the seedlings might take 2-3 years to reach a height of only 3 cm. During this time they are very vulnerable to drought in the intense exposure of the sun, so they almost invariably develop in the shade of a tree or shrub - a "nurse plant". For example, the image below shows a young saguaro - about 40 cm tall and probably 15 years old. It has grown up in the shade of a shrub (limber bush). These nurse plants not only provide shelter from the sun but also provide a soil with at least some organic matter (from fallen leaves etc.) and a richer supply of nitrogen - most of these nurse trees are nitrogen-fixing species, with Rhizobium or related bacteria in their root nodules. Desert communities depend of the cryptobiotic crust, an inconspicuous grey-brown covering of the sand surface, consisting of fungi, cyanobaceria and lichens, but in later stages of development (after 50 years or more;) the crusts form small humps on which mosses grow. All these pioneer organisms aid in water retention and pave the way for growth of higher plants. Lichens, which consist of a fungal tissue containing either green algae or cyanobacteria as the photosynthetic partner, play a vital role in colonisation of the bare sand. The cyanobacteria which fix atmospheric nitrogen (N2) gas into amino acids and thus progressively enrich the soil with nitrogen for plant growth.
