AFRICAN DEFORESTATION AND DESERTIFICATION
Linda Zeiler
Table of Contents: This unit will employ the geographic perspective to identify, analyze and predict solutions for the geographic issues of deforestation and desertification in Africa. Grade: Time: 2-3 weeks
CONNECTION TO CHALLENGES AND CHOICES
  • This unit provides a systematic observation and analysis of deforestation and desertification using geographic themes, concepts, and generalizations.
STUDENT PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The learner will:
  • Explain how geographic factors affect a nation's cultural, economic, and political features.
  • Recognize basic human universal needs (food, clothing, shelter and a sense of belonging) though these needs may be met in different ways.
  • Explain how people of the world are linked by transportation, technology, and communication and how they help fulfill each other's needs and are dependent on each other.

Desertification One of the impacts which global warming may have on the surface of the Earth is to exacerbate the worldwide problem of desertification. A decrease in the total amount of rainfall in arid and semi-arid areas could increase the total area of drylands worldwide, and thus the total amount of land potentially at risk from desertification. Desertification was defined at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 as "land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting from various factors including climatic variations and human activities". Desertification involves the depletion of vegetation and soils. Land degradation occurs all over the world, but it is only referred to as desertification when it takes place in drylands. This is because these areas are especially prone to more permanent damage as different areas of degraded land spread and merge together to form desert-like conditions. Global warming brought about by increasing greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere is expected to increase the variability of weather conditions and extreme events . Many dryland areas face increasingly low and erratic rainfalls, coupled with soil erosion by wind and the drying up of

It informs the German public about reasons for and world-wide catastrophic consequences of desertification. The members want to produce awareness for the problem and support the change of social and political actions. The Working Group took already part at the negotiation process of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on the Elaboration of an International Convention to Combat Desertification (INCD). In 1994 they came together with other NGOs, who work to this subject, the RIOD-network (Réseau International d’ONG sur la Désertification). Since 1995 the Working Group Desertification supports the RIOD-network as a national focal point. They follow up the current process of implementation of the ICCD. They follow up the creation of development- and environment political conditions donors and the implementation of the ICCD in upset countries. A special status is given to the observation and the support of use of the bottom-up approach of the convention, that describes the special role of the civil society to combat desertification successfully.

The Last Ranch : A Colorado Community and the Coming Desert
(Harvest Book) by Sam Bingham. Colorado's San Luis Valley is a land of broad, expansive range ringed by massive mountains that is visited only rarely by rain, about eight inches a year. It is also a place where a small enclave of ranchers struggle to make a living, fighting not only the elements but a host of forcespolitics, the pressures of modern culture and technology, the marketplacethat conspire to put an end to their generations-old community. For a year beginning in 1992, naturalist and magazine writer Sam Bingham lived in the valley. In The Last Ranch he brings to life both the people of the valley and a flock of international characters who have targeted the San Luis Valley for exploitation. At the center of the story are Donnie and Karen Whitten, high school sweethearts who live in a doublewide trailer with their three children, and who come to symbolize the tenacity of the residents of the valley as they endure against very long odds.

The Working Group on Land Degradation and Desertification of the International Union of Soil Sciences
AGENDA 21 of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development emphasizes the need and proposes a wide range of activities to address land degradation in general and desertification in particular. As a response to this challenge, more than 100 countries have signed the Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD) in 1997. A key point of the CCD deals with scientific and technical cooperation on investigation, collection, evaluation of the processes and factors involved in land degradation leading to desertification. At the conclusion of the Conference on Land Degradation at Adana, an International Task Force on Land Degradation, to be formed under the auspices of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), was proposed and unanimously adopted. Plato: Attica (Athens) was no longer cultivated by true herdsmen, who made husbandry their business, and were lovers of honor, and of a noble nature. As a result Attica had become deforested, the soils depleted, and there are remaining only the bones of the wasted body –all the richer and softer parts of the soil having fallen away.

Geography 210: Introduction to Environmental Issues
6.6 Desertification
Desertification is a process where the productive potential of arid and semi-arid land is reduced by the activities of humans. It is a serious and growing problem in many regions of the world including: sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, western Asia, northern Mexico and south-eastern South America, western United States, prairies of Canada, and eastern Australia. Scientists estimate that 60,000 square kilometers of new desert are now annually created worldwide. Desertification occurs when the natural vegetation cover is reduced in its cover and the topsoil becomes susceptible to erosion . The removal of the vegetation and topsoil then initiates a number of other problems including:
  • increase surface runoff and stream discharge reduction of water infiltration and groundwater recharge development of erosional gullies and sand dunes change in the surface microclimate that enhances aridity drying up of wells and springs reduction in seed germination of native plants
The effects of desertification can be reversed in many cases. Reversal begins by halting the activities that created the desertification. In many parts of the world
