Eclipses
One consequence of the Moon's orbit about the Earth is that the Moon can shadow the Sun's light as viewed from the Earth, or the Moon can pass through the shadow cast by the Earth. The former is called a solar eclipse and the later is called a lunar eclipse . The small tilt of the Moon's orbit with respect to the plane of the ecliptic and the small eccentricity of the lunar orbit make such eclipses much less common than they would be otherwise, but partial or total eclipses are actually rather frequent.
Frequency of Eclipses
For example there will be 18 solar eclipses from 1996-2020 for which the eclipse will be total on some part of the Earth's surface. The common perception that eclipses are infrequent is because the observation of a total eclipse from a given point on the surface of the Earth is not a common occurrence. For example, it will be two decades before the next total solar eclipse visible in North America occurs. The next total solar eclipse will be on August 11, 1999 , with the path of totality crossing the North Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East, and India. In this section we consider solar eclipses and in the next we discuss lunar eclipses.

Speculation on the study of Stonehenge have continued unabated from the time that it was first mentioned in the literature shortly after the Norman Conquest (1066). Evidence indicates that Stonehenge, built during the same era as the Great Pyramid of Egypt, was a brilliantly conceived astronomical observatory. Certain holes were apparently used as an eclipse predictor. "And on that day," says the Lord God, "I will make the Sun go down at noon, and darken the Earth in broad daylight." TIPE ECLIPSES Salut , bienvenue sur cette page qui te permet de télécharger notre TIPE réalisé durant l'année scolaire 2001-2002 à l'ESEO d'Angers par Jean-Eudes , Julien , Seb et Antoine. Ce sujet est très intéressant , mais on se rend compte bien vite des difficultés , surtout au niveau des calculs... Il y a donc une partie principale avec l'explication des phénomènes écliptiques , et une partie calculs , tout d'abord simplifiés , puis les éléments de Bessel. L'étude des éléments de Bessel est quasiment inévitable pour un TIPE traitant des éclipses. Notre source principale fut le site du Bureau des Longitudes sur lequel figurent de nombreux schémas et les éclipses y sont étudiées en long et en large. Devon Ravine for The New York Times Condominiums line U.S. Highway 98 in Destin, Fla. ESTIN, Fla., Aug. 11 The sand dunes of Okaloosa Island, like snowbanks, line both sides of U.S. Highway 98 between Fort Walton and Destin, and they are so pretty that people weave off the road, looking at them. The golden sea oats waft in the summer breeze, and gnarled pines, blasted by hurricanes that hit or barely missed, lean from sand so purely white that the sun flashes off it like a mirror and hurts the eyes. To the south, beyond the dunes, is the Gulf of Mexico, an emerald green when the sun is out and a deep, deep blue on cloudy days. And across the spit of the sand, to the north, is a wide bay, its water darker, a place where wading birds prowl the shallows, spearing fish and crabs. But at 55 miles an hour, this three-mile stretch of protected, mostly undeveloped federal land flashes past in an instant. In the amount of time it takes a tourist to tune his car radio, the little oasis is gone. And looking around at what has become of the rest of this part of the Florida Panhandle on each side of that stretch of sand, part of Eglin Air Force Base, it is enough to make some visitors wonder if what they saw was even real.

Predictions and maps for the solar and lunar eclipses are presented in a number of figures linked to this document. World maps show the regions of visibility for each eclipse. The lunar eclipse diagrams also include the path of the Moon through Earth's shadows. Nevertheless, the total phase can be seen from the northeastern most Canada. The event occurs just half a day before perigee. The Moon is in Gemini about one degree west of the bright star Delta Gem (m = +3.53).

This diagram (wildly out of scale) shows a side view of the alignment. From anywhere in the grey penumbra, you will see some part of the sun shining from behind the moon. The penumbra is the area of partial eclipse. Only from within the tiny area where the dark umbra touches the earth will you see the sun completely covered and witness a total eclipse. The earth and the moon are not fixed objects. The moon is busy orbiting the earth. The earth is busy orbiting the sun and additionally rotating on its axis. This means that the spot on the earth where the umbra falls is always in motion and actually traces out a path.
This diagram shows the path of the umbra for the eclipse on December 4, 2002. Only the central blue lines mark out the path of the umbra. The much wider area shows the path of the larger penumbra, where a partial eclipse can be seen. Click here for a closer map of the umbral path over Africa.
