in , the most southern region of Sweden.
Chemical ecology and ecotoxicology deals with the chemical background of interactions between organisms, between organisms and their environment, and the influence of chemical factors on the dynamics of populations and ecosystems. The aim is to describe relationships in ecosystems and predict and evaluate changes caused either by natural or anthropogenic compounds.
Scientific expertise covers chemical, ecological and taxonomical disciplines as well as methodology from micro-scale laboratory methods to large-scale outdoor experimentation. The section has well-equipped chemical analytical laboratories with heavy instrumentation such as gas-chromatograph, mass-spectrometers, liquid-chromatograph and electrophores equipments. Toxicology, chemistry and ecology issues pertinent to the marine and estuarinehabitats of the Southeastern US are the focus of Marine ecotoxicology.
http://www.chbr.noaa.gov/MarineEcotoxicology.html
Overview
(up)
Toxicology, chemistry and ecology issues pertinent to the marine and estuarine habitats of the Southeastern U. S. are the focus of Marine Ecotoxicology. A major goal is to establish linkages between land use and the presence of chemical contaminants in the marine environment. Interdisciplinary research is focused on identifying chemical and bacterial contaminants associated with anthropogenic inputs from agriculture, urbanization, dredging operations, and industrial discharges and their resulting toxicological and ecological impacts on marine and estuarine ecosystems.
Staff
(up)
Programs
(up)
Focused on understanding the effects associated with environmental contaminants in estuarine ecosystems with an emphasis on the development of sub-lethal indicators (biomarkers) of contaminant exposure and stress.
Dveloping methods to distinguish human vs. animal sources of bacterial contamination.
Chemical analysis of environmental samples for field / laboratory toxicity studies and development of new analytical techniques for environmental samples.
Conducts ecological and tocicological research on natural and anthropogenic influences in the coastal zone.

http://www.bio.vu.nl/do/ecotoxicology/
In the Ecotoxicology section , research is focused on the analysis of the response of soil invertebrates to toxicants in soil. Research involves the investigation of uptake routes, internal distribution and effects of toxicants in these organisms and the relation between internal concentrations and effects. Main aim is to unravel the mechanisms organisms use to cope with toxicants and the genetic variability in such mechanisms between populations. On the basis of results from fundamental research, instruments are developed for the assessment of possible ecosystem effects in cases of soil pollution. Finally, research aims at establishing a relationship between effects of toxicants at the individual level and the response of populations and ecosystems. Research projects involve studies on uptake and effects on individual, population and community level in connection with abiotic conditions (including the development of toxicity tests), studies on the physiological effects of PAHs and heavy metals for soil invertebrates related to factors like metabolism and energy budgets and research on the development of biomarkers and on the background and consequences of (genetic) adaptation to heavy metals.
