THE TOMB of NIANKHKHNUM and KHNUMHOTEP illustration from photograph ©1999 Greg Reeder In 1964 in the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, Egyptian archaeologist Ahmed Moussa discovered
a series of tombs with rock-cut passages in the escarpment facing the causeway that lead to the pyramid of Unas. Soon after the Chief Inspector Mounir Basta reported crawling on his hands and knees through the passages, entering one of the Old Kingdom tombs. He was impressed with its unique scenes of two men in intimate embrace, something he had never seen before in all the Saqqara tombs. Meanwhile archaeologists working on the restoration of the causeway of Unas discovered that some of the stone blocks that had been used to build the causeway had been appropriated in ancient times from the mastaba that had originally served as the entrance to this newly discovered tomb. The archaeologists reconstructed the mastaba using the inscribed blocks found in the substructure of the causeway. It was revealed that this unique tomb had been built for two men to cohabit and that both shared identical titles in the palace of King Niuserre of the Fifth Dynasty: "OVERSEER OF THE MANICURISTS IN THE PALACE OF THE KING."

  • Selected Bibliography The goal of this site is to be a "one-stop shop" for basic information about Egyptology, such as lists of Pharaohs and dates of their reigns, and capsule summaries of the more important gods of the Egyptians. If you would like to suggest any additions, modifications, clarifications, etc., feel free to contact me by email If you think some information is blatantly wrong, please contact me with a reference, and I will see if I can find some further information on the subject. In such cases, we may be considering two different versions of a myth or conflicting theories about a particular subject, in which case I will add the variant information, as such, to the FAQ.

    Amun
variant spellings: Amon, Amen, Ammon, Amoun / Illustration Amun's name means "The Hidden One." Amun was the patron deity of the city of Thebes from earliest times, and was viewed (along with his consort Amunet) as a primordial creation-deity by the priests of Hermopolis. His sacred animals were the goose and the ram. Up to the Middle Kingdom Amun was merely a local god in Thebes; but when the Thebans had established their sovereignty in Egypt, Amun became a prominent deity, and by Dynasty 18 was termed the King of the Gods. His famous temple, Karnak, is the largest religious structure ever built by man. According to Budge, by Dynasty 19 or 20, Amun was thought of as "an invisible creative power which was the source of all life in heaven, and on the earth, and in the great deep, and in the Underworld, and which made itself manifest under the form of Ra." Additionally, Amun appears to have been the protector of any pious devotee in need. Amun was self-created, according to later traditions; according to the older Theban traditions, Amun was created by Thoth as one of the eight primordial deities of creation (Amun, Amunet, Heq, Heqet, Nun, Naunet, Kau, Kauket).

A report presented at the Eighth International Congress of egyptology (Cairo, 28 March03 April 2000) provides a brief history of the Egyptian Museum and why a new facility is urgently needed; by Naglaa El Zahlawi.

This is part 2 of the 8th Congress Report: The Eighth International Congress Of Egyptology The New Egyptian Museum to be Erected Soon in a Newly Arranged Area
    Presented by Naglaa El Zahlawi
The present day Egyptian Museum in Cairo The first national Museum established in the Middle East was the famous Cairo Museum. The Museum has a long history that started in 1835 when Champollion presented to Mohamed Ali Pacha, ruler of Egypt a petition to establish a museum in order to store and protect the many monuments collected out of the digs in the pharaonic sites. Champollion wanted the whole world to admire these exclusive pieces located in Egypt he personally is fond of. The museum collection is constantly enriched with the excavation findings of Egyptian and foreign archaeologists and displaying adequately these objects became an on- going challenge. Provincial museums have partly helped to solve the problem that still exists as the Cairo museum in its present location in Midan El Tahrir is subject to threats from the environmental surroundings of buildings and heavy traffic and not to neglect vibrations and pollution. A new Great Egyptian Museum is urgently needed to display the objects in the proper way they deserve. A site 480,000 square meter has been carefully chosen 2.5 km north the Pyramids. A comprehensive context will highlight the value of more than 100,000 exhibited objects. Dr.Mohamed Saleh, Director of the project had stated:
