The Essig Museum of Entomology was originally founded as the collection component of the California Insect Survey (CIS) at the University of California, Berkeley. Most of the collection dates to the inception of the CIS in 1940. The museum houses one of the largest and most active research collections of arthropods in the United States, with more than 5 million specimens, primarily from western North America and the northern neotropics. The Essig Museum has always maintained a strong commitment to education and extension. Through this website we hope to facilitate access to information on the vast arthropod biodiversity of California and other regions within the scope of our holdings. How to find us
