These rodents eat and contaminate large amounts of feed, damage structures by their gnawing and burrowing and may spread diseases that affect livestock and people. Recognizing Rat Infestations The presence of rats can be detected by droppings or evidence of fresh gnawing. Tracks can be seen in mud and on dusty surfaces. Runways and burrows may be found next to buildings, along fences, and under low vegetation and debris. Back to Top Rat Facts Norway rats are fairly husky, brownish rodents that weigh about 11 ounces. They are about 13 to 18 inches long including the 6 to 8 1/2 inch tail. Their fur is coarse and mostly brown with scattered black on the upper surfaces. The underside is typically grey to yellowish-white. Rats will eat nearly any type of food, but they prefer high-quality foods such as meat and fresh grain. Rats require 1/2 to 1 fluid ounce of water daily when feeding on dry food. Rats have keen taste, hearing, and sense of smell. They will climb to find food or shelter, and they can gain entrance to a building through any opening larger than 1/2 inch across.

Insect Drawings Gallery Below are a series of original drawings used some 50 to 60 years ago as teaching aids for entomology at the University of Illinois. They were rescued from Harker Hall, the old Law, then Chemistry, and later Entomology building, during its recent renovation. The original drawings are on canvas, approximately 1.0 by 1.5 meters and were drawn as a WPA project during the Depression. Many of them seem to be based (sometimes closely) on drawings found in "Destructive and Useful Insects" by C.L. Metcalf and W.P. Flint. The images below are mainly overviews of several of the more common insect orders (The taxonomic purist will note that some of the panels contain more than one order as we recognize them today. Errata are listed here ). The images you see have been electronically "cleaned". Click on the opened icon (or the order name) to see the full image (or another page of choices). Also included are links to the Tree of Life at the University of Arizona by David and Wayne Maddison for those who want taxonomic information on each of the orders. Entomology The science of entomology is the study of insects, a group of animals which are invertebrates. Invertebrates have no backbone. However, insects can be distinguished from other invertebrates by their having three body parts (head, thorax and abdomen), six-legs, antennae, compound eyes and a hard outer casing made of chitin. Most insects have wings in some form, occasionally vestigial in nature, but some of the more advanced insects, which have evolved social living, have casts which have no wings at all (i.e. workers).
