Welcome to Ergonomics Australia On-Line. As part of ongoing development of these pages, access to year 2000 issues of EAOL and beyond will be via the UQ Ergonomics site ( http://ergonomics.uq.edu.au ). This requires (free) registration. The UQ Ergonomics site also now hosts an ongoing archive of posts to aus_ergo, a list for discussion of any topic related to ergonomics. The list membership is, as the name suggests, mostly Australian ergonomists, and there is a bias in the content to local issues, but anyone is welcome to join (see UQ Ergonomics pages for details). Older issues of EAOL remain available, and may be reached via http://www.uq.edu.au/eaol/index9799.html All enquiries or feedback should be addressed to the editor, Robin Burgess-Limerick PhD. Will Your Safety Harness Kill You?

Workers, supervisors must be aware of 'suspension trauma'
Harnesses can become deadly when a worker is suspended for longer than five minutes in an upright posture, with the legs relaxed straight beneath the body. This can occur in many different situations in industry, given the range of occupations where harnesses are worn.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Service Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health The printed version of this Primer was published in March 1997 as DHHS (NIOSH) Publication No. 97-117 FOREWORD
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) operates an 800-number to provide workers, employers, and organizations information about various workplace safety and health concerns. Over the past several years, the volume of NIOSH 800-number calls concerning work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) has grown. They are now second only to questions about chemical hazards. WMSD inquiries, exceeding 3,700 in 1996, have come largely from callers associated with small- and medium-sized businesses, which often have limited resources to deal with occupational safety and health issues. This document has been prepared to respond to the needs of this audience.
This primer describes the basic elements of a workplace ergonomics program. The text is largely built around NIOSH experiences in evaluating risks of WMSDs in a variety of workplaces. Descriptions of these NIOSH experiences provide practical illustrations of ways to identify and evaluate ergonomic hazards and to begin problem-solving efforts.

Efficacy of Human Factors
Human Factors is often used interchangeably with User Interface Design or Human-Computer Interface. There is a lot of overlap in these disciplines; however, Human Factors generally refers to hardware design while HCI generally refers to software design. Engineering Psychologist work in both disciplines and the overlap is considered greater than the difference. Optimum Human Factors Design requires a systematic approach to the design process. But, to ensure optimum performance, Usability Testing is required. This empirical testing permits naïve users to provide data about what does work as anticipated and what does not work. Only after the resulting repairs are made can a product be deemed to have a user optimized design. Today all large corporate and military manufacturers team design engineers with Engineering Psychologists to ensure optimum usability. Some of the prime industries relying on Human Factors for design consideration are: High Tech, aircraft, automobile, military, consumer products, and many other companies wanting an edge in the marketplace.

Ergonomic products: pros/cons
... VDT Reflections by Mark Rea Yes, we're having a little website formatting trouble! The content is back up, but getting it to look right is going to take some work. Please bear with us! This site contains office ergonomics information aimed at ergonomics committee members as well as office workers in general. The information here is based on the research literature whenever possible; it may not be consistent with some of the conventional wisdom that has persisted for decades, such as "sit up straight" or "have the monitor up high" or "the keyboard should be at elbow height." Office ergonomics deserves to be treated separately from general (industrial) ergonomics. The principles are the same, but there are so many subtle differences and different products that it's best to specialize. This site collects and publishes some "handouts" that have been used widely in training courses for office workers and ergonomists and health care professionals who work with office workers. The handouts have received good reviews with respect to their clarity, objectivity, and scientific basis. Some have been published in slightly different form in book chapters and manuals. We are pleased to share them with you.

For subscription information, call (800) 341-7874. OSHA Ergonomics Standard Update - April 8, 2002. After months of speculation and congressional questioning, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has released its plan to reduce work-related musculoskeletal disorders. As many expected, OSHA’s new plan stresses voluntary compliance. The administration said it will not replace the mandatory regulation killed by the Republican-controlled Congress last year. OSHA Administrator John Henshaw said the four-pronged approach will emphasize the following:
  • Guidelines. OSHA will immediately begin working to produce industry and task-specific guidelines that provide best practices for reducing ergonomic injuries, starting with occupations that have the highest rates of injuries. Henshaw said the guidelines will be issued sometime later this year. Enforcement.
