Extreme Environments on Earth: Analogs for Exobiology Faculty: Baross, Delaney, Deming, Frederickson, Gammon, Leigh, Rodrigo, Staley Background Our basic premise is that life on Earth is the best model we have for life elsewhere. Life here is extraordinarily adaptable: organisms thrive in extremes of temperature, pressure, pH, solute concentrations, dryness, ionizing radiation, and other conditions. Study of life in extreme environments on Earth guides the search for extraterrestrial life. We study Earth's "extremophiles", organisms (especially microbes) that live in the most extreme conditions, both to identify the extreme limits of Earth-like life, and to learn to identify the types and activities of those life forms. Starting Assumptions and General Hypotheses Liquid Water Assuming water is required for organisms' activity and growth, limits of microbial life can largely be defined by the boundary conditions for liquid water. Exobiology: Laying the Groundwork in a Search for Extrasolar Life Michael Meyer, Exobiology Program, NASA Headquarters How did life begin, both here and perhaps elsewhere? Are we alone, a chemical fluke, or are we the result of a process common in the universe? Prior to this century the question of our origin has been relatively unconstrained. With knowledge gained through experimentation and space science - about Earth, the solar system, and the universe - the question of our origins has become a serious scientific quest. Exobiology, the study of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe, embodies this quest. With the recognition that: chemical evolution proceeded rapidly to life on Earth, life may be a natural consequence of planetary evolution, and planetary systems may be common in the universe, life is likely to be common in the universe. How can we find it? With modeling, observation, and sampling in our solar system, we can learn of the planets' evolution through time. What is the relative importance of distance from the sun, bulk composition, and mass that determine whether the planetary body could have ever sustained life. What planetary bodies are the better candidates for life around other stars? What are the potential signatures for life? So far, we have only one example, rather evolved life at that. How would Earth's biosphere appear from space? Technology has an obvious signature but technology has been here for an extremely limited period of time. For the last 2 billion years, Earth's biosphere has been dominated by oxygenic photosynthesis - ozone would be an indicator. Chemical disequilibria are maintained by biology and could be indicative of life, for example methane or nitrous oxide in the presence of oxygen. But what of early Earth? What combination of reduced species would be indicative of life in a reducing atmosphere? Perhaps Earth's atmosphere was dominated by volcanic activity during its first 1.5 billion years, swamping any biological signature. An alternative maybe to search for a predominance of an optically active pigment, like chlorophyll or rhodopsin.

(Borg Queen in VOY: Dark Frontier") For some reason, most humanoid aliens (not to mention the Borg), although they usually look very much like humans, seem to be physically stronger than humans. In addition, they have longer life spans, better developed hearing and sight, and other superior mental and physical capabilities. All of the above seems to apply to Vulcans, who have excellent minds (and mental discipline), are telepathic, are stronger, are able to hear a broader range of frequencies, and have self-healing capabilities. Klingons are at least much stronger and live much longer than humans (Kang, Koloth and Kor are still going into battle at the age of 140something!), and they have many redundant systems in their bodies. One question is why such a puny species like ours could have ever come so far and could have survived so long at all. Well, in the process of evolution strength or intelligence is not the primary criterion, but it is rather the ability to adapt and to reproduce, and this is where humans are apparently very efficient still in the 24th century. "Evolution" in a galactic scale is only in its very early stage, so we shouldn't compare humans to aliens in this respect - aside from my feeling that such comparisons would be sort of racist. Anyway, a lot of human deficiencies seem to be compensated by other general qualities. Humans, for instance, are very often shown as ingenious minds, such as Richard Daystrom or Carol Markus. This should make the human species a match to seemingly stronger aliens.
