updated 28.1.2003 COURSE OBJECTIVE The purpose of this course is to provide engineers, scientists, and researchers with a critical survey of the state-of-the-art of finite element methods in solids, structures, and fluids, with an emphasis on methodologies and applications for nonlinear problems. The fundamental theoretical background, the computer implementations of various techniques and modeling strategies will be treated. Advantages and shortcomings of alternative methods and the practical implications of recent research developments will be stressed. Recent mathematical and algorithmic developments will be explained in terms comprehensible to engineers. WHO ATTENDS This seminar is designed for engineers in industry, government, and academia who wish to obtain an overview and understanding of nonlinear finite element methods. A background in engineering or applied sciences and some previous exposure to finite element methods are necessary for understanding the material covered in this course. The course has been offered annually in the U.S. and Europe since 1985. The attendees are engineers and scientists from: corporations, such as Dassault, Boeing, General Motors, Ford, Daimler Benz, BMW, Fiat, PSA, Renault, Philips, Fujitsu, IBM, EDF, Siemens; software companies; government laboratories, such as Livermore, Argonne, Sandia; government offices, such a NSF and the Defense Nuclear Agency; U.S. Navy, NASA, ESA and Air Force Laboratories and universities.

Overview
The Engineering Vibration Toolbox is a set of over 35 educational programs and associated files written in M ATLAB by Joseph C. Slater . It can be run on any platform supported by M ATLAB (Mac, Windows, VMS, Unix). Also included are help files, examples, and files containing raw experimental data. The codes include single degree of freedom response, response spectrum, finite elements, numerical integration, modal analysis and phase plane analysis. It is included free with the text "Engineering Vibration" by Dr. Daniel J. Inman Prentice Hall , 1994). The version for use with student versions of M ATLAB 3.5 is bundled with older printings of the book (PC version, Mac version available from the MathWorks, Inc. ). It is still available on the download page. No other toolboxes are required to run this new version. The files are also distributed on 3.5" disk by the MathWorks, Inc as stated in the back of the text (at least in some printings!).

RFEM is a multi-purpose FEM-program that can analyze deformations, internal forces, support forces and contact pressures of 2D and 3D structures made of plates, shells, walls and/or members.

An Analysis of New Mixed Finite Elements for the Approximation of Wave Propagation Problems

Abstract. We construct and analyze a new family of rectangular (two-dimensional) or cubic (three-dimensional) mixed finite elements for the approximation of the acoustic wave equations. The main advantage of this element is that it permits us to obtain through mass lumping an explicit scheme even in an anisotropic medium. Nonclassical error estimates are given for this new element. Abstract. This paper deals with the approximation of elliptic second order problems with a nonconforming domain decomposition method that allows for coupling spectral and finite element discretizations in three dimensions. We present two kinds of matching conditions at the interfaces between the subdomains. The detailed numerical analysis of the error committed upon the exact solution turns out to be optimal. We describe also the implementation and give some numerical results confirming the theoretical predictions.   • Modeling the Object:
    • Drawing the box: Draw a rectangle in the xy plane
      Change the view so you see the side of the rectangle lying down (view (2) XZ fro)(a horizontal line)
      Modify:Copy:Join:select all: F3 :Keyboard input
      Hit return to set the origin as your move start
      Set the move end so that a box will be created (for example if z is your vertical direction, set the move end to 0,0,Z where Z is some on the same order as a side of your rectangle).
      Copy:last move - this will perform the same copy:join function on the new rectangle (it should be highlighted)
      Changing to an isometric view, you should see that you have created a box with 3 rectangular cross sections similar to that shown in the sketch below. Though you now have an image that looks like a "box," what you have actually done is establish the locations of the nodes which will be shared by all of the elements.
    • Customizing and saving the models You want to now create two different models using this basic geometry information: The first model to be saved will be the "skin". The skin will be made of membrane elements (two dimensional plane stress) and in order to help keep the element types differentiated we want to save this model using a different "color" element. Under the menu item Modify:Update select all of the lines and under Color change them all to "2" or red. Then proceed to "Files" and "Save As" a file named "boxskin."

Abstract
Two generalised shallow-shell bending elements are developed for the analysis of doubly-curved shallow shells having arbitrarily shaped plan-forms. Although both elements are formulated using the concept of iso-deflection contour lines, one element uses the three displacement components U V and W as the basic unknowns, while the displacement component W and the stress function serve as the unknowns in the other element. A number of illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the accuracy and relative convergence of the proposed shallow-shell elements when employed for static analysis purposes.
