Finite Element Analysis
TWI has developed and applied finite element analyses for over 30 years. The Finite Element Section is part of the Structural Integrity Technology Group. Using state-of-the-art CAD and FE software, analyses are performed for all industries. The team works within a practical testing environment and liaises with materials and engineering staff to provide accurate results and interpretations based on extensive test data.
Hardware and software
Finite element analyses are conducted on a Silicon Graphics 4 CPU Origin 200 with 1.5 GB RAM. Pre-processing is carried out using CADfix, supplied by Fegs Ltd. This software generates meshes from engineering drawings, or from imported CAD data. TWI employs the general purpose finite element code ABAQUS which is widely used by a range of industries worldwide. Occasionally, additional software is used for specific projects, e.g. fluid flow or advanced fracture analyses.
Quality assurance
All technical activities within TWI are controlled by a management system which complies with the general requirements of the ISO9000 series of standards. QA procedures within the FE section are closely followed, and all work is subject to internal peer review.

Patrick Laborde (Toulouse): Analysis of finite elements for contact and friction problems
Detailed Abstract: We are concerned with two questions in the finite element modelling of contact and friction problems. The first one is relative to the use of quadratic finite element for unilateral problems. Error estimates are obtained for Signorini model in elasticity, and numerical simulations are given [1]. In a second part, we take into account constitutive non linearities of plasticity type in the friction problem. We present some numerical experiments [2].
P. HILD et P. LABORDE, Quadratic finite element methods for unilateral contact problems, submitted. N. RENON, Thesis in preparation, CEMEF Sophia-Antipolis

Who We Are
What We Do Successes Careers ... Acoustic Technologies
Modeling Complex Structural Acoustic Problems SARA Efficiency
The infinite/finite element technique utilized in SARA provides a cost effective method for solving the fluid-structure acoustics problem because:
  • Interaction equations are symmetric and banded. Infinite elements reduce exterior fluid field to only a few layers of elements. Exterior fluid field normal to the structure is constant with frequency, but element size is varied. As SARA problems get larger, the infinite element method is more efficient than BEM.
SARA Adaptability
SARA finite element codes are adaptable to a range of structural acoustic problems. BBN Technologies has solved the following types of problems using the SARA software:
  • Structural Vibrations - Compressible isotropic and anisotropic materials as well as incompressible isotropic materials can be analyzed. Frequency dependent moduli and loss factors may be included. Continuum and shell elements are available for modeling. Structural Acoustics - Pressure type fluid elements are provided for modeling internal or external fluids. The representation of infinite fluids is enhanced by infinite elements that include in their complex representation the outward traveling and decaying wave shapes. Separate fluid and structure models are created and connected via coupling elements. Far-field or near-field pressure can be computed.
