This program utilizes p-version finite elements for accuracy in resolving gradients.
Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas
The P-Finite Element Integrated Thermal-Structural Program (PITS 2D) solves the equations for the combined effects of thermal expansion and elasticity in a two-dimensional or an axisymmetric three-dimensional structure. The name of this program reflects the use of p -version finite elements, in contradiction to the traditional use of h -version finite elements. In comparison with older finite-element programs that utilize the h -version, PITS 2D predicts physical response more accurately in the presence of large gradients. A p -version finite element in PITS 2D (see figure) can be either a quadrilateral or a triangle with concave and/or convex curved sides. A quadrilateral element is defined by eight nodes: four of them define the corners, and each of the remaining four nodes defines the approximate midpoint of a curved side. Similarly, a triangular element is defined by six nodes, three lying at the corners and each of the three remaining nodes lying at about the midpoint of a curved side. In an h -version finite element, the displacements, stresses, strains, temperature, and other physical quantities are represented by trial first-order functions of spatial coordinates. The solution that one seeks is embodied in the coefficients of the functions. In a

Finite Elements Simulation of the Curing Process in Thermosetting Composites M. Fouad Ahmad , Cristina Beldica , Harrison Poon and John Michopoulos The National Center for Supercomputing Applications
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL 61801 The Mechanics of Materials Branch,
Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC 20375-5000 Introduction: Several concerns associated with thermosetting composites have become increasingly important. The most familiar concern is that thermoset composites can exhibit excessive internal temperature increase and thermal spiking due to their low conductivity and strong exothermic crosslink reaction. Another concern is associated with the complex temperature and degree of cure gradients that develop, specially in thick-sections, and induce non-uniform curing that leads to matrix microcracking and overall poor quality of the cured part.
Figure 1. Two finite element approaches are presented to simulate the autoclave curing process of thermosetting composites and to understand the fundamental relationships between processing and the overall quality of the manufacturing parts. The simulation presented here allows for establishing the influence of the cure cycle and geometry of the composite on the curing process. It can be used further to select the most appropriate autoclave parameters for any given composite. Analysis: A non-linear transient finite element analysis is used for the three dimensional simulation of the curing process in thermoset composites. The temperature distribution and the degree of cure inside the laminate are determined from the non-linear anisotropic heat transfer equations coupled with the cure kinetics of the composite.

Finite Elements With No Mesh, No Fuss
By Richard Petti Partial differential equations (PDEs) are the language of choice for describing continuous physics. By continuous physics, I mean any theory where physical quantities are represented by continuously varying functions - quantities such as temperature, strain and electromagnetic fields. Many of the fundamental concepts of science are described by PDE's, such as expressing heat flow in terms of the gradient of the temperature, or expressing the net source of momentum as the divergence of a stress tensor. Prices for FEA software used to start above ten thousands dollars. Today's new generation of FEA software, available for personal computers and workstations at drastically lower prices, means that solving PDEs can be a routine procedure for scientists who are not experts in numerical analysis and have modest budgets. It's a very exciting time for scientists who want to solve PDEs. This article was submitted by Richard Petti, President of Macsyma Inc., developers of Macsyma, a symbolic mathematics program, and PDEase, a new add-on for performing finite element analysis.

AxisVM version 6.0
AxisVM is a high productivity finite element analysis software tool for civil engineers. Due to it's extensive analysis capabilities (designed for use by civil engineers), AxisVM (and it's predecessor, Axis-3D) proved to be successful applied in design of projects ranging from world-class international airports to design of steel microwave towers, from mega shopping malls to school gymnasiums, from showrooms and theaters to municipal water tanks, even underground.
Performs static, vibration and buckling analysis of 3D bar, membrane, plate, shell structures. Enables use of an unlimited number of nodes and unlimited number of elements that can freely be combined in a model. In typical applications the software is used to analyze:
  • plane/space frames/truss girders elastically embedded beams/membranes/plates/shells plane stress/strain membranes ribbed plates spatial shell structures any combination of above mentioned structures
An advanced graphical user interface lets structural and civil engineers work in the design type environment found in architectural software. The engineer can edit the model using the exciting functions and commands available in the Visual Modeling environment.
The AxisVM's user interface lets document the results graphically and numerically in a very flexible way.

FEM ( F inite E lement M ethod) #) This section presents my automatic gear FEM program for the gear tooth stress analyses. I have about 1,500 triangular elements and can have the solutions more than 10 times faster than when the standard Gauss elimination method is used. My current point of interest is speeding up calculation time and saving memory drastically by means of a strategic mesh layout, not by solution methods. This section, however, describes several well-known solution methods first in order to konw which method has the quickest algorithm for obtaining the solution to the FEM system equation. animated solution display : This graphic output shows how the solution converges. The solution method used is the Gauss-Seidel iterative method, which was known that it may be the simplest solution method but slowest to obtain the solution to the system equation. rough mesh layout with 167 triangular elements : My program produces a rough mesh layout and generate a fine mesh layout. It is one of my projects, in which I study the relation between solutions by rough mesh layout and by fine mesh layout. I may be able to estimate the maximum stress values in the fine mesh system by calculating the rough mesh system. fine mesh layout with 167*9 = 1503 triangular elements : Each element in the rough mesh is divided into smaller 9 elements. This is also a simple task but the program makes some nodal points to move to their exact positions on the tooth curves.

( Mesh Generation , Preprocessor , Postprocessor , Netgeneration , Finite Elements , AutoCAD ) Deutsch Test installation:
A demo installation and full installation can be loaded see readme.html Interface between AutoCAD and other application
Makros-A can be started from within AutoCAD as an ARX or ADS application and allows transferring geometry data between the two applications. AutoCAD entities are converted to line, surface or solid elements and can then be saved in an ASCII file for further use in other application programs. AutoCAD entities can also be read from a DXF file. Finite Element mesh generation
Makros-A can also be used as a stand alone application for net meshing. First a geometry model of the solid to be analysed is generated within AutoCAD or graphic interactively generated with commands of Makros-A. This macro model is then meshed mostly automatically to a finite element model. Loads, properties, constraints are assigned to the finite elements within Makros-A. The model is saved to a NASTRAN or PATRAN file for finite element analysis. A fast algorithm allows a free mesh generation of plane surfaces as shown in the following picture.

Aladdin is a computational toolkit for the interactive matrix and finite element analysis of large engineering structures, particularly building and highway bridge structures. Aladdin views finite element computations as a specialized form of matrix computations, matrices as rectangular arrays of physical quantities, and numbers as dimensionless physical quantities. Aladdin Version 1.0 , released in May 1996, provides engineers with:
    • Mechanisms to define physical quantities with units, and matrices of physical quantities.
    • Facilities for physical quantity and matrix arithmetic.
    • A SI and US units package. Conversion of units may be applied to physical quantity constants, physical quantity variables, and matrices of physical quantities.
    • A matrix package. Its capabilities include matrix arithmetic, solution of linear matrix equations, and the general symmetric eigenvalue problem.
    • Programming constructs to control the solution procedure (i.e., branching and looping) in matrix and finite element problems.
    • A finite element mesh generation package. Two- and three-dimensional finite element meshes can be created.
