is organised in two sections: Mechanics, address: The Laboratory of Fluid Dynamics and Thermo- and Fluid Dynamics, address: The Thermal Energy Laboratory. The department...
Solid Mechanics comprises basic theory of statics and strength of materials, elasticity- and plasticity theory, continuum mechanics, material modelling, fracture mechanics and damage mechanics. Further, dynamics and mechanical vibration are enclosed. Fluid dynamics includes fundamental theory of fluid mechanics and computational modelling of turbulence, as well as non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, gas kinetics and areo- and gas dynamics and multi-phase flow. This area includes considerable activities within computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental fluid dynamics. Thermodynamics comprises classic thermodynamics, heat- and masstransfer, combustion techniques and thermal qualities of materials. Numerical simulation, especially problems connected to chemical reactions in turbulent flow, is an important part of the practical application.

52. Navier-Stokes Equations: Introduction
A brief summary of the NavierStokes equations governing fluid dynamics and fluid mechanics.
http://www.eng.vt.edu/fluids/msc/ns/nsintro.htm
Navier-Stokes Equations
Introduction
The Navier-Stokes equations are the foundation of fluid mechanics and, strangely enough, are rarely recorded in their entirety. Furthermore, their presentation is frequently muddled in both texts and in the classroom. Sometimes this confusion is appropriate (or at least is the product of understandable compromises); examples include the desire to "derive" these equations and to provide "warm fuzzies", e.g., examples, motivations, applications, etc. Less appropriate confusion is due to, ..... well, don't get me started ....... The main idea of these notes is to write an easily accessible, i.e., web-based, summary of these equations which are both correct and complete. I will admit that I won't be 100% comprehensive here. Some compromises are needed for the sake of tradition and brevity. However, I will do my best to point out any holes. For example, check out the What's Missing page to see the main topics which I have had to leave out.
G.G. Stokes
Please note that you will find absolutely no derivations or proofs here. Rather, the idea is to give folks the final answers with some limited comments on the meaning of these results.

dynamics; (3) sea ice mechanics and dynamics research; (4) atsea measurement ofocean structures and analysis thereof;(5) fundamental fluid-dynamic research
http://www.nwra.com/research.html
Our areas of activity are diverse, but several of them are linked by the common thread of geophysical fluid dynamics. These linked activities span from (1) plasma physics in the ionosphere and near-earth space; (2) experimental and theoretical studies of atmospheric dynamics; (3) sea ice mechanics and dynamics research; (4) at-sea measurement of ocean structures and analysis thereof; through (5) fundamental fluid-dynamic research in the laboratory, by computational simulation, and in closed-form theory; and on to (6) laser/optical measurement and inspection systems. Details of these Research Areas can be found at the following links:
Initially to meet its own need for a research tool, our group also has developed a capability in computer graphics and image processing. More recently, our projects have included other computer applications, such as expert system development, pattern classification, and software product development. Home Site Map Company Staff ... http://www.sjtu.edu.cn/english/web3/State/Fluid.html
FLUID MECHANICS DISCIPLINE
Since the establishment of the Fluid Mechanics Discipline of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1958, it has undergone massive changes and developments. Being recognized the outstanding performance in modern hydrodynamics, this discipline has become one of the earliest doctor training units in China , and has right to award degrees of M.Sc. and Ph.D. Currently, it's a civic key discipline in Shanghai. The post doctor station set up in 1995 accepts 1-2 research fellows every year. Since 1978, the discipline has trained more then one hundred graduate students who hail from all parts of the country. The F.M.Discipine acquired 21 awards of Science and Technology Progress Prize of nation, industrial ministries and Shanghai government, including once the third award of nation and twice the first award of Shanghai. There are over 100 journal papers, conference papers and books published during this period. Discipline facilities include a gravity-type cavitation water tunnel, a multi-function water channel, a small low speed wind tunnel, a venturi-type recirculating high speed tunnel, a 2-D laser doppler velocimeter with intelligent data processor and underwater noise surveying instruments. A number of computers, ranging from IBM compatible PC's to SGI workstation are available for researches and studies. The major research areas and interests of the F.M.Discipline are as follows:

WORKSHOP ON GEOMETRY, DYNAMICS AND MECHANICS IN HONOUR OF THE 60th BIRTHDAY OF J.E. MARSDEN
August 7-10, 2002
Audio of talks Photos from Workshop Fields Mail List Schedule ... Visitor Information
ORGANIZING COMMITTEE: A. Bloch P. Newton T. Ratiu S. Shkoller ... A. Weinstein OVERVIEW:
The workshop will be organized along the seven main themes of Professor Marsden's work: (1) Geometric mechanics
(2) Fluid mechanics
(3) Elasticity and analysis
(4) Numerical algorithms
(5) Relativity and quantum mechanics
(6) Geometric control theory
(7) Dynamical systems The common thread running throughout is the use of geometric methods which serve to unify these diverse disciplines and help bring a wide variety of scientists and mathematicians together, speaking a language which encourages cross-fertilization. Professor Marsden is a unique figure in this regard as his work has significantly influenced the three distinctly separate communities of mathematicians, physicists, and engineers.
The workshop will bring together the world's leading figures in each of these seven theme areas who will give invited lectures.
