21. Canine Research Page
The University of California, Davis includes information on building a DNA database. The aim is to establish a genetic profile for each breed at each genetic marker.
http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/research/canine/
Many thanks to the American Kennel Club's Canine Health Foundation for funding our research and to the thousands of dog fanciers who have contributed samples. Canine Genetics Research at VGL In the last several years there has been dramatic increase in canine genetic research. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) is actively working on projects that contribute to the international effort to understand the canine genome. It is our goal to apply this knowledge to enhance canine health and performance. Interested in more information about starting a research project involving your breed? Click here to learn about developing genetic tests. CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS AT VGL Multiplexed Genome Screening Panels As a result of international collaboration, a high resolution canine genetic map is almost completed. (See links ) This map consists of hundreds of microsatellite markers from labs around the world. Armed with this information, researchers can now search for a specific trait or disease gene to identify for diagnostic testing. In order to make efficient use of these hundreds of microsatellites, it is neccessary to build multiplexed screening panels. This allows for us to evaluate fifteen markers at one time instead of each individually. The Veterinary Genetics Lab is taking on this challenge by multiplexing 100 polymorphic mapped loci into 8 to 10 panels. As they are completed, the protocols for these panels will be made available to interested researchers.

B. CAT COLOR GENETICS
Domestic cats exhibit a rich variety of coat patterns and colors. The names given to these colors and patterns are increasingly based on genetic theory. Many people have expressed confusion over the names that cat fanciers apply to the coat colors and patterns, so this article has been written to help explain the names given to the possible colors and patterns, and why these names are applied. This article attempts to introduce and describe the colors and patterns of domestic cats and the names that are given to them. It does not attempt to explain the mechanisms of inheritance nor the formulas for calculating the possible outcomes of particular breedings.

Applied Genetics , a Genetic Discussion, as it relates to the Burmilla
The reader should note that this page is a compilation and consolidation of the previous genetics material . These discussions assume that the reader has some knowledge of, and is interested in, broad based cat genetics. We do not spend any time on the mathematics of homozygotes, heterozygotes and predictions of checkerboards. We will not try to teach the subject. We rather point out the characteristics of the breed, as they appear and as we see them. As such, proofs can only be conclusive when dealing with recessives.
We are not always correct and do not expect to be. Sometimes we must amend our conclusions in light of subsequent breeding, and increased understanding, and we hope that in putting these opinions forward that they will encourage other breeders to come forward with their observations.
There are many good web sites on the Internet on "cat genetics". For our text references we use Gloria Stephens book Legacy of the Cat edit #1, and Robinson's 'Genetics for Cat Breeders and Veterinarians' edit #4. We recommend the beginner to Gloria Stephens's book Legacy of the Cat. It has more information packed into a few pages, with explanatory pictures, than any other text we have found. We use both books bouncing from one to the other.
Gloria also has a good web site with many links. (Key word her name on a search engine.) A very good article by Breton /Creek is posted on the Net Pets site. That same article is posted on various sites. It has, what I suggest is a, formatting problem on its second chart that created some confusion for me, but the same article is posted on Ms. Stephens's site in its original form. This cleared up my misunderstanding. Note; as of Christmas 2001 we have "Legacy" edit. #2

Being a collection of any recognized variety broken up by white spots, makes it more a group than a specific variety. This color also has many genetic factors that go into controlling the large variety of patterns gracing our show tables. One pattern type is the "blanket" which involves a large blanket of color covering the back and progressing to different degrees down the sides. The other classification is more of an English spot pattern, which involves a stripe of color down the spine and spots along the sides in different degrees. Now you wonder how you can plan your breedings to get one or the other and keep within the standard requirements of no less than 10% color and no more than 50% color. First lets look at what the genetic make-up of this color is (genotype). The following chart will list genes in order of dominance and underlined genes apply to the Broken Rex. Broken factor En En = Charlie (very little color)
    En en= Broken
en en = solid Pattern within colored areas
A = agouti (ring pattern on hair shaft, ex. Castor)
