What is Glaciology?
The cryosphere plays an important active and passive role in the climate system. On one hand the global ice and snow covered area varies on seasonal, interdecadal and millenial time scales modulating the radiation budget and hydrological cycle of the earth. On the other hand polar ice sheets and cold alpine glaciers represent unique archives of climatic change, which provide a multitude of information on paleoclimatic (temperature, precipitation, circulation) and paleoatmospheric (aerosol concentration, trace gas abundance) conditions. Both the reconstruction of ice sheet volume and the mass balance of glaciers by means of modelling, geophysical reconnaissance methods as well as field studies and the unraveling of climatic information stored in the ice matrix and in air bubble enclosures of polar ice cores are the main scientific objectives of the glaciology department at AWI. *realplayer 8 is needed for viewing the movie Responsible: Johannes Freitag and Webmaster

Within the Department of Geophysics and Astronomy at UBC, the glaciology group has a long history of research activity. Since 1969, we have been monitoring Trapridge Glacier , an alpine surge-type glacier in the St. Elias Mountains, Yukon Territory. This longstanding field project continues, but in recent years, the scope of our research has broadened to include large-scale ice sheet modelling . The work we do here spans the gamut from measuring local changes in subglacial conditions of an alpine glacier, to comprehensive process modelling of the Laurentide ice sheet which covered much of North America in the last ice age.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) operates a long-term "benchmark" glacier program to intensively monitor climate, glacier motion, glacier mass balance, glacier geometry, and stream runoff at a few select sites. The data collected are used to understand glacier-related hydrologic processes and improve the quantitative prediction of water resources, glacier-related hazards, and the consequences of climate change ( Fountain and others, 1997

UBC Ice Sheet Modelling Program
UBC Glaciologists are developing theoretical and numerical models of ice sheet thermomechanics and subglacial physics. A 3D finite-difference model of the Laurentide Ice Sheet is operational. It is currently being enhanced with a detailed description of bed topographic and geologic characteristics , a basal hydrological model and a bed thermodynamic model which tracks permafrost and temperature evolution in the upper crust. We have also developed a continuum mixture framework which describes dynamic and thermal evolution of ice streams. The modelling effort is part of a multidisciplinary initiative Climate System History and Dynamics (CSHD) . This program brings together several Canadian groups and aims to integrate and develop national expertise in paleoclimate modelling and reconstruction. More details on the UBC ice sheet model are available here
