"In 1972 K. Duguid produced a detailed structural study of the Commoner Mine below the eighth level."
A gist of it follows :-

Photomicrograph at X 10 magnification of polished block of Commoner gold reef showing the close association of gold with carbonaceous (black) matter in the reef quartz (reddish background). "The carbon adsorbed the gold from epithermal solutions… only to 'throw' it out partially as free milling gold during the later deformation."

from "Amber: Window to the Past", Abrams/AMNH (NY), courtesy of Dr. David Grimaldi. Welcome to “ Amber: Arboreal Gold ”. As you can see, I really ‘dig’ amber. November of 1998, I was able to travel to Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, where I retrieved a fine collection of Baltic amber and brought it home. My partner Paul Howell and I have established a website, the Amber Gallery . On this new site, you may view or purchase Baltic amber specimens. My own web page features Dr. George Poinar of Oregon State University, and his wife and research partner Roberta. He has given me permission to publish photographs and excerpts of his book “ The Quest for Life in Amber ”, a follow-up to his book “ Life in Amber ”. Dr. Poinar released his new book, The Amber Forest in July of 1999. This book covers the origins of Dominican amber. Most recently in 2002, he has published his work with Lebanese amber. These books are available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble's site, and probably in your local university library in the geology and entomology departments. Dr. David Grimaldi of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City also granted me permission to showcase his book “ Amber: A Window to the Past .” Grimaldi has a new publication due out in October of 2000. Both are exceptional scientists and sometimes disagree on research technique and method. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for them both. So what is good science without a little controversy? I enjoy reading and following their work and hope you will, too.

GOLD IN MAINE
Gold occurs in several geologic environments in Maine: in bedrock, in sediments that were eroded from bedrock by glaciers, and in stream deposits derived from either of these sources. Veins of gold in bedrock are called "lode" deposits, and "placer" deposits are concentrations of gold that accumulated in unconsolidated sediments. Most of the gold presently found in Maine comes from placer deposits in stream beds.
GENERAL REGULATIONS
With the exception of areas administered by the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission (see below), gold panning activities in Maine do not require a permit as long as the following restrictions are adhered to: 1. The activity is confined to sandy/gravelly/cobbly unvegetated stream beds, with no disturbance of stream banks. 2. The activity is limited to the use of gold pans, sluices of less than 10 square feet, or suction dredges with a hose diameter of 4 inches or less. 3. Permission from the landowner must be obtained. Why? First, it's a matter of common courtesy to the landowner. But also, trespassing on posted land in Maine can be a matter of civil law. The water in a stream is under the jurisdiction of the State; but the stream bottom and streambank as well as the access across land to the stream is most likely private property (exceptions include public lots, state parks, etc.). If you cause any damage to that property, even if it is not posted, you may be subject to civil action brought by the landowner. You can avoid these problems by talking to the landowner ahead of time.

"The country is wild, rough and full of hardships for those unused to the rigors of Arctic winters. If a man makes a fortune he is liable to earn it by severe hardship and sufferings. But, then, grit, perseverance and luck will probably reward a hard worker with a comfortable income for life."

Clarence Berry , one of the miners returning on the Portland, quoted in The Seattle Post-lntelligencer, July 17,1897. With cries of "Gold! Gold in the Klondike!" there unfolded in the Yukon and Alaska an incredible historic adventure, whose theme of human endeavor in the face of adversity captured the imagination of people around the world. In August 1896 when George Washington Carmack and his two Indian companions, Skookum Jim and Tagish Charlie , found gold in a tributary of the Klondike River in Canada's Yukon Territory, they had no idea that they would set off one of the greatest gold rushes in history. True, most of the good claims were already staked by the time the rush really got underway in the summer of 1897; but this didn't stop an army of hopeful goldseekers from boarding ships at Seattle and other Pacific port cities and heading north to try their luck. Throughout the summer and autumn of 1897 and on into the winter, stampeders poured into the newly created Alaskan tent and shack towns of

Although this park is famous for its gold rush history, its geologic story is at least as exciting!
The western edge on North America has been shaped by collisions between the massive, moving slabs of rock that geologists call plates . Miles of uplift and erosion by water and ice have unveiled the extraordinary story once hidden within the rocks.
Evidence of the dynamic forces that continue to build Alaska today is revealed in rocks exposed along the highway that winds through Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. A Brief Description of Major Gold Deposits of Saskatchewan
The people of Saskatchewan not directly concerned with mining are scarcely aware of the mineral potential of the province. We are the prime source of Potash and Uranium in the world. We also have and have had "world class" gold mines in our province. The recognition that Saskatchewan geology provides the framework and vast potential for truly world class mines has been slow in coming. Gold, that most elusive of noble metals, is abundant in our Precambrian shield areas. The surface has barely been scratched, the potential has barely been touched at this point. Some excellent reference books are available to those who would wish to delve further. The best and most accessible "Gold in Saskatchewan" (Open File Report 84-1) is available from the Department of Mineral Resources' Core Lab in La Ronge or the main office in Regina. Beginnings are vague The Churchill subprovince We are fortunate that "our" rocks have trapped and crystallized a vast amount of gold. Gold sightings over the years can be traced from those first reports by canoeists in the early 1900s spotting visible gold in quartz veins in Western Craton outcrops on Pine Channel (north shore of Lake Athabasca). This predated visible gold discovered at Amisk Lake (The Prince Albert Deposit) in 1914. Exploration/ prospecting during and immediately after the first world war resulted in further discoveries related to the original Pine Channel and Amisk Lake showings. In the early 1930's the north shore of Lake Athabasca saw renewed exploration initiated by the discovery of yet more gold. The Box Mine resulted.

GREETINGS FELLOW PROSPECTORS
This Highbanker/Dredge combination I purchased in 1986; upgrades I have added since then; (Dredge Header Box, 4" Upgrade and Float System) plus their hooka system.. It has been a very dependable unit over the years. I rebuilt the 5hp Briggs myself 2 years ago with a rebuild kit from my local lawnmower shop. This was my choice, it has never broken down or failed to perform its job.
Prior to this highbanker I used an old Keene 4 inch, triple sluice, for 10 years. The highbanker/dredging combination proved to be more practical and versital for weekend prospecting. The 4" is more for setting up once the paystreak has been located. Now with the new 4" additions, it has prospecting/production in the one unit. Much easier to pack and setup than the triple. Which we still use when we really want to move mass quanities of overburden.

Main Contents Partners Geology History Location Placer Evaluation Method Gold Rush Mining Geology The Geology Of Valdez Creek
The Valdez Creek Mining District's geology was affected primarily for four significant glacial episodes. The last one being in the Holocene period, a relatively young period which occurred 9,5000 years ago. According to USGS geologist, Fred Moffit, the glacial deposits in the lower valley of White Creek indicate flow directions had changed probably due to the fact of the changes in ice production and accumulation. As a result, these movement contain irregularities net usually found in the White Creek drainage. Two types of gold nuggets were found, one pale colored, smooth and round, the other bright and rough with attached pieces of quartz. Moffit concluded that the ice had brought them into White Creek from the valley of Valdez Creek on the north end of Lucky and Gold hills.
Placer gold is the end product of a long process. Transportation of gold happens mainly by erosion and glaciers. Agents of erosion includes: running water, waves, currents in bodies of standing water and wind. Glacier movement scours and transports minerals, bedrock, gold, and other precious metals. When the glacier melts, it typically deposits the metals directly form the melting ice. Upon further melting of the glacier, streams form and rework the placer deposits, occasionally under the ice.
Most pieces of gold in the Valdez Creek Mining District, especially at the mouth of the valley, have characteristics proving glacial abrasion. These characteristics included a roundish shape with flat and smooth surfaces. Even though gold is the most malleable the ductile of metals, it still requires a thousand meters or more of ice transportation to take on these characteristics. Nuggets recovered form the tributary system such as Timberline Creek, White Creek, and Lucky Gulch are still shinny, course and rough. These nuggets indicate that they have not traveled a great distance, Therefore, they are probably close to the source.

gold geology and exploration
Gold occurs in such a variety of geological environments that the truism "gold is where you find it" is oft-spoken. Likewise, the list of theories postulated to explain the origins of the various types of gold deposits is as long as the history of mining this precious metal Because gold is a high-value commodity, it can and has been profitably mined in the remotest parts of the globe. In Canada , for instance, mining has occurred in highly developed areas such as Timmins, Ontario , as well as the far reaches of the northern Arctic (Lupin Mine, NWT ). For the investor, the main concern should not be the location of a new discovery but the width and grade of the drill intersection or surface prospect. An understanding of the geological setting at this point is extremely important to the potential economics of a discovery. A near-surface discovery in meta-sediments grading 0.03 ounce per ton gold over a long width is likely to be as significant as a 0.3-ounce-per-ton discovery over narrow widths in a sheared volcanic in a
