The Geology
Variegated schists, amphibolites and quartzites form rugged hills capped by laterite and intruded by dolerites. Certain areas are overlain by a white sands formation. Hornblende biotic gneisses form a large complex group south of Oko Mts. Gold is associated with Barama-Mazaruni assemblage. Alluvial deposits of Cuyuni river are ~ 15 m. deep and are mineralized with fine gold from top to the bedrock.
Estimated gold grade:
The expected overall (over a total volume of material) gold grade should be between 0.35 and 0.85 gram per cubic meter. Paleochannel has a higher gold grade than active river channel where constant addition of sterile alluvium dilutes overall gold grades. A bulk sampling pit, within a paleochannel just below Oko river, produced 261 ozs. from ~7,000 m3 of sand/gravel. (1.16 gram per cubic meter) The active river channel was dredged during late 70's and early 80's with 6 inch jet pumps. The average production, for a 15 h. work-day, was between 10 and 15 ozs. per day. Later, 8 inch gravel pump dredges reworked tailings, and in the same length work-day produced 4 to 6 ozs. per day. At the end of 1997, few dredges were reworking old tailings for a 1.5 to 2 ozs. per day production.

Geology of Pluton-Related Gold Mineralization at Battle Mountain, Nevada
Ted G. Theodore
This new publication, which includes three major chapters by a number of authors from the mining industry, presents a comprehensive overview of gold mineralization in one of the classic mining districts in the Basin and Range country of the western United States. The publication is the latest in a protracted and wide-ranging collaborative investigation that documents the behavior of gold in pluton-related systems in the Battle Mountain Mining District. The monograph includes documentation of the three-dimensional relationship between distal-disseminated Ag-Au deposits and the skarn-related, porphyry Cu environmentincluding revised grade-tonnage distributions for the formeras well as documentation of a complex structural imbrication in the Devonian, Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and Permian Havallah sequence in the upper plate of the Golconda thrust and its role in the genesis of the gold deposits. It also contains a comprehensive examination of petrochemical evolution of submarine volcanic rocks in the Havallah basin. As a result, regional exploration criteria are developed for distal-disseminated Ag-Au environments and their coeval relations with Carlin-type gold deposits. The book also includes three recently completed full-color geologic maps at 1:24,000 scale of the northern one-half of the Battle Mountain Mining District. These maps are of the Valmy, North Peak, and Snow Gulch 7 1/2 minute quadrangles.

The Rattlesnake Hills lie along the northern margin of the Barlow Gap 1:24,000 scale quadrangle in central Wyoming. The Barlow Gap quadrangle was mapped by Wayne Sutherland and assisted by W. Dan Hausel in 1999. The Rattlesnake Hills district was mapped by W. Dan Hausel of the Metals and Precious Stones Section of the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) in 1995. The results of the Rattlesnake Hills appeared in WSGS Report of Investigations 52. These mapping projects are part of an ongoing Precambrian geology and economic geology research project by the WSGS. Mapping of the Barlow Gap Quadrangle was partially funded by the US Geological Survey STATEMAP program. The Rattlesnake Hills project was funded entirely by the WSGS budget. This region of the northern Granite Mountains contains one of the best gold prospects in the State for open-pitable gold mineralization. Barlow Gap lies within the ancient Archean craton known as the Wyoming Province, and includes geologic units ranging in age from

Soroki greenstone belt has been encountered in Priazovian granulite-greenstone terrane of the Ukrainian Shield (Figure). Stratigraphy of the belt is mainly defined by age-different metamorphosed volcano-plutonic associations (VPA) of the komatiite-tholeiite formation (from the base): lower tholeiite-gabbro-diabase (KT-1), lower komatiite-dunite-harzburgite (KT-2), upper tholeiite-gabbro-diabase (KT-3) and upper komatiite-dunite-harzburgite (KT-4). As well, ore-hosting litho-facial complex also includes schist-BIF-tholeiite formation which is spatially linked to the above VPA of komatiite-tholeiite formation replacing them laterally. The section is capped by rhyodacite-plagiogranite VPA which is extremely important in the Ukrainian Shield greenstone belts structure and their ore-forming processes development. It is suggested the gold mineralization is genetically linked to the fluid systems of this VPA which have been separated from the parent VPA within 3.15-3.3 Ga.

KANOWNA BELLE GOLD DEPOSIT - EXPLORATION HISTORY AND GEOLOGY Kim Stanton-Cook, Chief Geologist - Australasia,
Delta Gold N.L.
Talk given to the Geological Society of Australia Annual Conference, Ballarat, Victoria, 1992 ABSTRACT
Geological Society of Australia
Abstracts Number 32, Ballarat 1992.
Gold was first discovered in the Kanowna area, approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, in 1893. Gold mining in the area peaked in 1898 with the production of 152,000 ounces from vein-hosted and alluvial sources. From 1911, production became sporadic and declined rapidly before ceasing in 1946.
Interest in Kanowna surged again in 1979 as the gold price rose, resulting in increased exploration activity and, in 1986, the recommencement of mining at Kanowna. Total gold production from the Kanowna area is approximately one million ounces.
Exploration for additional mineralisation in the Kanowna area focussed on extending, or finding repetitions of known vein deposits and deep leads. Minor success was achieved on both fronts leading to the open pit mine on the old Ballarat and Last Chance vein systems (Delta Gold 67.5%, Pancontinental Mining 32.5%) and the commencement, after the amalgamation of leases to form the Golden Valley Joint Venture (Delta Gold 50%, Peko Gold 50%), of mining the deep leads for heap-leach treatment at the QED operation.
Using proven mineralisation concepts for the area, the GVJV employed the established techniques of soil geochemistry and RAB drilling to explore for vein and deep lead deposits.

I bring you gold and silver moons,
And diamond stars, and mists that float.
I bring you moons and snowy clouds,
I bring you prairie skies to-night
To feebly praise your golden eyes And red-bird song, and throat so white. To Gloriana -Nicholas Vachel Lindsay [1879-1931] The English word gold comes from a series of ancient words that refer to the color yellow. Its rarity, beauty and ability to be shaped by man have made it a highly desired precious metal throughout the history of mankind. "Gold fever" has been a frequently recurring affliction for humans. Today, artists and artisans use gold extensively in making jewelry and other objects of beauty. Also, because of its distinctive characteristics as a metal, gold has important uses in dentistry, photography, industry and electronics. Contentment -James Jeffrey Roche [1847-1908] Gold Facts: Chemical composition : Elemental gold (Au) Mineral class: Native element Crystallization: Isometric Crystal habit: Crystals sometimes well-developed, but also may be massive

GEOLOGY OF THE RIDGEWAY GOLD DEPOSITS
RIDGEWAY, SOUTH CAROLINA INTRODUCTION Kennecott Minerals Company (KMC) operates a 15,000-ton-per-day open-pit gold mine located approximately 5 miles east of the town of Ridgeway, and 25 miles north of Columbia, South Carolina (Figure 1). The Ridgeway gold mine is one of four gold mines which were put in production in South Carolina in the 1980’s. It is currently the only operating gold mine in the Eastern United States. BRIEF HISTORY OF DISCOVERY AND DEVELOPMENT The Ridgeway gold deposits are essentially virgin discoveries which had been known to only a few prospectors before the 1960’s. Both deposits have small prospect pits along the west sides of the pits, and a few other pits have been found scattered along the Ridgeway trend for several miles east and west. Several people participated in the "rediscovery" of the deposits in modern times, and include: • Prospector John Chapman, whose gold panning efforts recognized gold in the vicinity of the deposits and who passed this information along to the South Carolina State Geological Survey; • Geologists Henry Bell and Henry Johnson, whose geochemical investigations of streams and auger borings peripheral to the deposits established the presence of gold, tin, and other anomalous metals;
