What is GraphThing
GraphThing is a tool that allows you to create, manipulate and study graphs. These "graphs" are mathematical objects (look at this introduction to Graph Theory ) that describe relationships between sets; they are not 2D plots, charts, or anything similar to that. If the image on the right means nothing to you, you're probably at the wrong place.
Is it free?
GraphThing is Free Software , licensed under the terms of the GNU GPL . That means that not only does it cost you nothing , but you also have the freedom to redistribute it or modify it however you please, so long as you also give these freedoms to others. If you find GraphThing useful, especially in either an educational or academic setting, please email me and tell me your thoughts about it!

    Biography
    Gregory received his MSc in Mathematics in 1979 from Gomel State University, Belarus. He worked in high school and research institutes of Belarus from 1979-1990. He studied for PhD under Professor Noga Alon at the School of Mathematics, Tel Aviv University, Israel and received his PhD (with distinction) in 1993. Between 1993 and 1996 he held visiting positions in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Odense University, Denmark and then became a lecturer at the Department of Mathematics, Brunel University, UK. Since 1 September 2000, Gregory has been Professor in Computer Science, Department of Computer Science, Royal Holloway. Gutin's main research interests include graph theory and algorithms, combinatorial optimisation, linear and integer programming. He has published more than sixty research papers, and a monograph : J. Bang-Jensen and G. Gutin, Digraphs. Theory, Algorithms and Applications. Springer-Verlag, London, 2000 (ISBN: 1-85233-268-9). He co-edited (with A.P. Punnen) a new TSP book : Traveling Salesman Problem and its Variations, Kluwer, 2002 (ISBN: 1-4020-0664-0). A preliminary version of Chapter 6 is available in

They were originally used by me in an introductory OR course I give at Imperial College.     Graph theory
    Introduction
    Graph theory deals with problems that have a graph (or network) structure. In this context a graph (or network as many people use the terms interchangeable) consists of:
    • vertices/nodes - which are a collection of points; and arcs - which are lines running between the nodes. Such arcs may be directed or undirected and undirected arcs are often called links or edges.
    An example graph is shown below. Graph theory is used in dealing with problems which have a fairly natural graph/network structure, for example:
    • road networks - nodes = towns/road junctions, arcs = roads communication networks - telephone systems computer systems foreign exchange/multinational tax planning (network of fiscal flows)
    Note here that the minimum cost network flow problem (also dealt with in this course) is an example of a problem with a graph/network structure.

Graph theory is the branch of mathematics that examines the properties of graphs A graph is a set of dots, called vertices or nodes, connected by links, called edges or arcs. Depending on the applications, edges may or may not have a direction; edges joining a vertex to itself may or may not be allowed, and vertices and/or edges may be assigned weights, i.e. numbers. If the edges have a direction associated with them (indicated by an arrow in the graphical representation) we have a directed graph Structures that can be represented as graphs are ubiquitous, and many problems of practical interest can be formulated as questions about certain graphs. For example directed graphs are used to represent finite state machines . The development of algorithms to compute certain properties of graphs is therefore of major interest in computer science
