Infectious Diseases and Immunology
Clinical and training programs
Clinical experience is drawn from patients on general medical, surgical, pediatric and ob/gyn services, including specialized areas such as hemodialysis, oncology, cardiac surgery, neonatology, ophthalmology, renal transplantation, orthopedics andurology. Diagnostic microbiology includes antibiotic assays, anaerobic bacteriology, virology, mycology, mycobacteriology, serology, and parasitology in addition to routine bacteriology. Infection control activities include device-related infections, antibiotic surveillance and laboratory studies.
The infectious diseases fellowship program consists of two pathways for training. One track, designed for two years, has a primary emphasis on training in clinical infectious diseases, diagnostic microbiology, and infection control. This track prepares the fellow for a career in the clinical practice of infectious diseases. The second pathway, which is for at least three years, offers combined clinical and research training. This track prepares the fellow for an academic career and consists of one year of clinical training and the remainder of time in research which is supported by a National Institutes of Health training grant. The program also has a rotating weekly interhospital clinical conference, a monthly lecture series, a biweekly journal club, and weekly clinical conferences on both general infectious disease management and HIV disease which residents are encouraged to attend.

Welcome to the CSACI Website! About the Society The Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology
is one of the oldest specialty societies in Canada. It was founded in 1945 as the Canadian Society for the Study of Allergy and changed its name in 1954 to the Canadian Academy of Allergy. In 1967, it adopted the present name, The Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (CSACI). The goals of the society, as outlined in the constitution, are to: Improve the standards of teaching and practice of allergy and clinical immunology Foster co-operation between those engaged in the study and practice of allergy and clinical immunology Encourage research in the field of allergy and clinical immunology Promote harmony and understanding between physicians engaged in the practice of allergy and clinical immunology and others of the medical profession. From the time of its inception the society lobbied for accreditation of allergy and later, clinical immunology as a separate subspecialty of medicine. Since accreditation was granted in 1968, CSACI members serving on the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and / or university committees, collaborated in developing goals and objectives, curriculum specifications and evaluation systems appropriate for postgraduate training programs in the specialty. There are now five RCPSC accredited training programs in Allergy and Clinical Immunology in Canada: at the University of Manitoba, McMaster University, University of Toronto, McGill University and the University of Western Ontario. Certified Allergists and Clinical Immunologists are specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases such as asthma and anaphylaxis, immunodeficencies and autoimmune diseases.

Allergy Asthma and Immunology Associates PC-Lakeside
The Lakeside location of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Associates was opened to provide convenient care for children and adults who live in greater western Omaha and the surrounding areas. Dr. Brett Kettelhut is currently seeing patients by appointment on Tuesday and Thursdays.
Dr. Kettelhut's philosophy of allergy, sinus and asthma care is the family approach to management of these disorders. In families with members with allergies, sinus or asthma, the involvement of the family is important to promote the best enviroment for the allergic family member. Consideration and cooperation in providing an enviromentally allergen free home is essential in the management plan. Judicious use of medications and when appropriate, allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) provide the cornerstone of the active treatment plan. The goal of treatment is to alleviate symptoms, control the progression of the disorder and to restore the health and vitality of the individual to ensure a full and active life.
Our western Omaha office space is located at 17030 Lakeside Hills Plaza, Suite 218, in the Lakeside HealthPark. The opening of the new office was on March 1st. Allergy injection therapy is given on Tuesdays from 10AM until 12PM and then from 2PM until 5:30PM. Additional hours for allergy injectins are now on Thursday from 1:30PM until 4PM. The office hours are from 10AM until 6PM on Tuesdays and from 9AM until 5PM on Thursdays. The office is closed for lunch from 1PM until 2PM on Tuesdays and from 12PM until 1PM on Thursdays.

Experimental Immunology Section
Research
The interest of the Experimental Immunology Section is to learn about ocular antigens, the immune responses they provoke, the inflammatory diseases induced by these responses and the mechanisms that modulate these diseases. Specific studies under current investigation include: 1) The mechanisms of immunotolerance against ocular antigens are being investigated , focusing mainly on the role of the thymus in this process. These studies include: (i) Cells expressing ocular-specific antigens are being identified in thymi of wild type mice, using immunohistochemical methods. (ii) Apoptosis of lymphocytes specific toward ocular antigens is being actually visualized in thymic sections of double transgenic mice expressing a foreign antigen (hen egg lysozyme, HEL) in their lens and HEL-specific T-cell receptor (TCR) on their T-cells. The apoptosis effect is demonstrated by reduced HEL specific responsiveness in the periphery of these mice. 2) Cellular mechanisms of ocular inflammation are being investigated, using transgenic mice expressing HEL in their lens as recipients for T-cells expressing HEL-specific TCR. Purified subsets of lymphocytes (Th0, Th1, Th2) are being prepared and their features are being compared with regard to the their pathogenicity and the typical histopathological changes they provoke in the recipient mice.

whole organism vaccines In 2002 11 million infants living in under-developed countries died from vaccine-preventable disease. There is nothing in vaccinology that may be called as "scientific basis", "guiding theory" or even "basic understanding" for the mysterious art of developing vaccines : it is purely empirical technique relying exclusively on hit-and-miss methods. Vaccinologists have at their disposal a broad (and rapidly expanding) variety of technical methods for constructing a so-called "candidate vaccine", i.e. a preparation with high immunogenicity and which is, perhaps, perfectly safe, but whose capacity for preventing disease is absolutely unpredictable. Modern vaccinology is like a nervous child about to lose faith in Santa Claus who avoids discussing this theme with his friends and screams at every adult who discusses it with a fatuous smile... Vaccines can be made against ...
