Scientific Instrumentation
Seeing the infinitely small and unimaginably distant Telescopes and microscopes are windows into two otherwise obscure realms the cosmos and the universe within a living cell. In both realms, high-performance computing is opening new vistas to exploration. The Application Technologies Scientific Instrumentation Team includes scientists working in both realms. Their shared objectives are using powerful microscope and telescope technologies via long-distance networks and timely processing of huge volumes of data. In the microscopic realm, an exciting possibility presents itself. Recent advances in electron microscopes, which use electron beams rather than light to image samples, make it feasible to obtain direct images of the molecular structure of proteins and other biomolecules. This makes it possible to skip the painstaking, slow process of puzzling them out from x-ray or NMR data. Such an enormous leap can be accomplished only by connecting the microscopes to high-performance computers. A major task of the Scientific Instrumentation Team is to develop software that aligns the images and builds a single coherent structure from up to 100,000 randomly oriented sample molecules.

Remote scientific instrumentation
  • Using a standard Web browser, researchers, teachers, or students in any location and at any time have the potential to access the latest scientific instruments without having to travel to a remote site or invest in the hardware themselves.
  • Accordingly, the Web becomes a laboratory for many fields of research and education—a World Wide Laboratory (WWL).
  • Chickscope is a working example of the WWL project.
  • In addition to Chickscope, there are other innovative scientific instrumentation projects on the Web (e.g., Stardial, an autonomous astronomical camera).

Mission Overview
Instrumentation
Veneras 11 and 12 were part of the French-Soviet collaboration SIGNE 2. The SIGNE 2 project consisted of French-built gamma ray detectors on the Soviet satellites Venera 11, Venera 12, and Prognoz 7. These 3 satellites then formed an interplanetary gamma-ray burst triangulation network. Two features made this program unique in its time: it was the first time that identical detectors had been used simultaneously for gamma-ray burst studies on separate spacecraft over interplanetary distances, and the experiments used the largest dedicated gamma-ray burst detectors put into orbit.
