SELECTED SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTATION PROGRAMS
The programs listed below are typical of federally supported scientific instrumentation programs requiring or strongly encouraging institutional cost-sharing; it is current as of September 2001, but program availability and deadlines should be checked before a proposal is prepared. Other scientific instrumentation programs are announced to the appropriate disciplinary areas as guidelines and deadline information become available. National Science Foundation Multi-User Equipment and Instrumentation Resources for Biological Sciences (MUE) (NSF 98-137) Program supports the purchase of equipment that will be shared by a number of investigators having actively-funded research projects in areas supported by the Directorate for Biology. Click here National Science Foundation Chemistry Research Instrumentation and Facilities (CRIF) (NSF 00-81) provides funds for the purchase of multi-user instruments, for major instrumentation development and construction, and for the establishment and support of multi-user research facilities in the chemical sciences. Click here National Science Foundation Instrumentation for Materials Research (IMR) (NSF 01-5) supports the acquisition or development of research instruments that provide and/or advance new capability to discover fundamental phenomena in materials; synthesize, process, and/or characterize the composition, structure, properties, and performance of materials; and improve the quality, expand the scope, and foster and enable the integration of research and education.

Gifts for the Holidays
Computing gifts for your favorite scientist (or yourself) John Joyce http://oreilly.com, ISBN: 0-596-00193-2, pp.136, $12.95, ©2001). The book chronicles the further adventures of the crew at Columbia Internet as visualized in the author's User Friendly comic strip. The collection has definite geek appeal, and can be counted on for a laugh. For those with a somewhat more macabre bent, I highly recommend The Darwin Awards: Evolution in Action by Wendy Northcutt (Dutton, http://penguinputnam.com, ISBN: 0-525-94572-5, pp. 308, $16.95, ©2000). This book is a delightful combination of debunked urban legends and actual Darwin Award winners, honored posthumously to those who have successfully removed themselves from the gene pool through an astounding misapplication of judgement. If nothing else, you can take away the lesson that careful experiment design may be even more critical than you thought in terms of career, and life, continuation. The holidays are also ripe for gifts in the one field that I've always felt could help improve a scientists analytical abilities more than any other: magic. Often considered to be the anti-thesis of science, magic trains scientists to look closely at physical phenomena and understand it. Magic is also useful because it tricks the senses. Using misdirection, magic teaches us not to be fooled by frauds or tricksters, or perhaps more importantly, makes us less likely to fool ourselves.

97. San Diego Scientific Instruments, Inc. Offers Precision Powder Pipetter
instrumentation for powder filling applications. Powder pipetters for pharmaceutical laboratory applications.
http://www.sdsii.com/
San Diego Scientific Instruments, Inc. introduces the 2300 Powder Pipetter,
the most efficient, accurate solution for your powder filling applications. The Model 2300 adjustable volume powder pipetter is a simple solution to repetitive small volume powder filling applications. Suitable for small vials, 96 well plates, or other powder filling or dosing applications, the 2300 can fill from .0045 to 25 grams depending upon the configuration. A small vacuum pump draws powder into the stainless steel pipette tip. A foot-operated switch reverses the airflow and the powder is gently ejected. The pipetter can be precisely set with its micrometer adjustment. A replaceable filter minimizes cross contamination.
San Diego Scientific Instruments, Inc.
welcomes the opportunity for you to test the system using your powder products at your site. Please ask for a free demonstration. Home About SDSI Products Dealer Inquiries ... privacy
