Discovery, Invention and Innovation
Objective: Define discovery, invention, and innovation. Discuss the interactions between these activities. Discuss the incentive system promoting each. Briefly discuss the evolution of institutions promoting these activities. Next, discuss two learning strategies that promote innovation. Then, discuss the impact of constant advance of technology on industrial organization. The index for this section is:
Definitions
Definitions for discovery, invention and innovation are:
a. Discovery : A new increment to knowledge. In this course we consider three types of knowledge of physical, biological or social systems. Theoretical knowledge is increasingly expressed as a mathematical model. Empirical knowledge is obtained from observations of new phenomenon or observations deliberately taken to test a theoretical hypothesis. Last, but not least, is practical knowledge. An important economic example is the practical knowledge acquired by a workforce to make a new manufacturing plant operate efficiently. This knowledge is intuitive and frequently very difficult to express as equations.

22. TECHNOLOGICAL INVENTION AND INNOVATION
TECHNOLOGICAL invention and innovation. Innovation, on the other hand, involvesthe use or development of an invention for some useful purpose.
http://www.innovativecapacity.com/TechInvInno.htm
TECHNOLOGICAL INVENTION AND INNOVATION Invention is the most important product of scientific knowledge. Without invention, science would be merely inquiry for its own sake, serving few and helping no one. Invention involves the discovery of new processes, ideas or tools. Invention is prioritary, meaning that only a new or previously unknown discovery can be considered an invention, as opposed to the development of an already existing one. Patenting an invention requires priority, meaning that no one else must have come up with the same (or similar) idea at any previous time. Patenting involves an exhaustive scrutiny of an idea’s novel qualities and an evaluation of its potential uses by experienced specialists from various fields. The evaluation of a patent application often requires years before a final determination on award can be made. Innovation , on the other hand, involves the use or development of an invention for some useful purpose. Innovations have often served as the point of departure for new inventions. Innovation is typically less risky than invention, since it usually deals with known parameters, qualities or quantities.

Invention and innovation words and terms
Invention, Innovation, product innovation, process innovation, service innovation, incremental innovation, radical innovation, continuous innovation
Innovation strategy, strategy for innovation, managing innovation, management of innovation
Three stages of innovation - idea creation, development, commercialization
Innovation has occurred when any aspect (e.g. capability, use) of a product, process or service provides an improved solution to a need
Incremental innovation involves small improvements and extensions to existing products, processes and services. The target is to increase efficiency - higher quality, reduced times and lower costs. For an incrementally new product the customer is known and the technology does not radically depart from conventional practice
Radical innovation involves major change. Typically there are unknowns concerning both customer and technology

I'm hoping to attract leaders who will not only educate, but will continue SubmarineSchool's tradition of invention and innovation, so that decades from now

By CAPT Bill Hanson, USN (above left) This is an actual screen shot from a VESUB Officer of the Deck training scenario, depicting a man overboard. (above right) This screen shot is from a VESUB approach scenario. It depicts a railroad bridge and other landmarks when coming up the Thames into Submarine Base, New London Since the day I relieved CAPT Arnie Lotring as Commanding Officer, Naval Submarine School, I have been overwhelmed and delighted on a daily basis by the technology and the innovation found across our schoolhouse. But of course, there is a more traditional element found everywhere in the Navy - and especially here - that is even more valuable to us than quality technology - quality people. The instructors here at Submarine School are the foundation upon which we continue to build tomorrow's Submarine Force, and providing these quality people with the best tools to educate our Sailors will always be the center of my focus. Naval Submarine School currently has more instructional technology per square foot than many colleges and universities, but we are far more than the sum of all our tools. Learning technology is worth nothing without a dedicated staff to assure it's used to its best effect to develop, maintain, and elevate a consistent level of educational excellence.

26. Invention And Innovation: The Need For A New Paradigm
Restoring a value/branddriven market is our most important problem. To do thiswill require both invention and innovation, creation and destruction.

Clayton Christensen, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School, has restated Mr. Kuhn’s logic in The Innovator’s Dilemma2. Mr. Christensen’s premise is simple. Innovation is either sustaining or disruptive. Sustaining innovation (SI) is typically seen as improved performance of existing products. It is incremental and safe. “New and improved” banners on cereal boxes and bathroom tissue come to mind. SI is the lifeblood of mature, slower growing markets. SI is predictable, conservative and risk averse.
Disruptive innovation (DI), on the other hand, creates new and conflicting value propositions at all levels and forces competitors and consumers to make reactive decisions. Mr. Christensen identifies key characteristics of DI’s, which include the following:
• They emerge out of insignificant markets.

The Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation and The Archives Center National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution - Travel to Collections Awards Program The Travel to Collections Awards Program is designed to support research on the history of invention and innovation based on the extensive holdings of the Museum's Archives Center and curatorial divisions. The Archives Center is a manuscripts and special collections repository with more than 10,000 feet of holdings which are particularly strong in personal papers and business records documenting the history of American enterprise and technology.
Invention-related archival collections include: George H. Clark "Radioana" Collection, William J. Hammer Collection (electric light and central power stations), Western Union Telegraph Company Records, Parke, Davis and Co. Research Laboratory Records, the United Shoe Machinery Records, and the Allen B. Du Mont Collection (television). Individual inventors are documented in the Leo H. Baekeland Papers (Bakelite) and the Earl S. Tupper Papers (Tupperware).
In addition, the Lemelson Center supports oral and video documentation of contemporary inventors and inventions. These holdings document inventions such as the SmartLevel, a high-tech electronic level; the Gerber Cutter, a computer-controlled fabric cutter invented by H. Joseph Gerber; the Sendzimir "Z" Mill for cold rolling steel invented by Tadeusz Sendzimir; and the windsurfer invented by S. Newman Darby
