INVENTION TO INNOVATION: DOES BRITAIN FAIL?
A research team from the University of Edinburgh will spend the next three years investigating the perceived failure of British industry to turn inventions into innovations over the last fifty years. The project, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council with a grant of £193,662, will undertake comparative studies of technology transfer involving firms in the UK, Germany, Japan and the USA. The focus for this study is to track the exploitation of inventions patented and licensed by the British Technology Group, and its predecessor, the National Research Development Corporation. The NRDC was set up in 1949 amid concern that the UK was failing to get full benefit from its inventions. The example often cited was that of the first antibiotic drug, penicillin, which, although discovered by the Scottish bacteriologist Sir Alexander Fleming, was commercially developed in the USA. Researchers will look at, and compare, firms operating in different industrial sectors, with varying types of technologies, and in several countries. They will also consider the impact of national, structural factors such as the market economies and investment policies on technology transfer. Says research team grant-holder Dr Graham Spinardi of the Research Centre for Social Sciences: "In some of these cases, UK industry appears to have been highly successful in exploiting a British invention. In others, the success appears to have been more limited. Other cases show almost complete failure on the part of UK industry to take advantage of indigenous inventions."

http://www.inknowvate.com/inknowvate/invention_vs_innovation.htm
Innovation is the bridge between inspiration and invention. invention vs innovation A focus on innovation within technology development will be a primary vehicle for realizing a new global-culture value system. T here is a large difference between 'innovation' and 'invention'. During times of great change, innovation dominates over invention. During transitional periods such as in the present, invention occurs AFTER innovation is realized. Later, invention again leads invention once the emerging global-culture system has established itself and a new point of stability has become clearly apparent. Also, sustainability is directly linked to new forms of innovation where, by its very nature, is not something that anyone can determine its final outcome, only its direction. However, there is also invention in which outcomes are much more predictable. It is more what most design organizations have been doing throughout the industrial revolution. inKNOWvate proposes that a company can create a balance between there present inventive state along with their need to generate deeper forms of innovation. Doing both allows an organization to become more adaptive, and therefore more sustainable by creating more consistent business activity and thereby more stable profits as a result. Note that deep innovation is necessary during times of dramatic social evolution; a time in which we are all presently involved. Differentiating Invention from Innovatio

CASE STUDY The art of the quantum leap Dec 6th 2001 THEY are often taken for granted: but the magnetic materials that are the basis of computer technology have a long and intriguing history. In ancient times, the Chinese and Greeks were well aware of the attractive power of lodestone. Italian seafarers used the mineral's insistence on pointing north for navigation in the 14th century. But it was not until the beginning of the 17th century that an English physician named William Gilbert showed that the earth itself was one giant magnet. Navigation aside, the commercial exploitation of magnetism really began only in the 19th century. The starting-point was the observation by Lord Kelvin of how the electrical properties of a piece of iron change when it is placed in a magnetic field. The effect, called magneto-resistance, derives from the way the magnetic field interacts with atoms in the metal, causing them to change their orientation. Today, magneto-resistance is used widely in magnetic sensors and in read-heads for hard-drives in computers. It is probably fair to say that magneto-resistance may have done more than any other branch of physics to make the information society a reality (see image). The physicists' motivation was pure scientific curiosity. One of the first people to recognise the potential of GMR to boost the storage capacity of computer hard-drives was Stuart Parkin of IBM's Almaden Research Centre in San Jose, California. What followed was a remarkable quantum leap in storage capacity. Computer hard-drives suddenly jumped from a few paltry gigabytes to tens and now hundreds of gigabytes, making it possible for even laptops to store as much information as the Library of Congress.

The Telegraph:
From Invention to Innovation By: Brendan Nee The nineteenth century was a period of innovation and expansion for America. Many new developments in the scientific arena occurred. These developments allowed engineers to create many powerful new things. One of the most significant creations of the nineteenth century was the telegraph. The telegraph was a compilation of the ideas of many people. The people who had the most significant effect on the creation of the telegraph were Joseph Henry, Samuel Morse, and Ezra Cornell. These three men were able to turn invention into innovation. Joseph Henry opened the door for the telegraph. He was a bright American physicist who began his life as a teacher and civil engineer. On a visit to New York, he was influenced and impressed by an electromagnet that he saw on display. This inspired him in an attempt to improve on the electromagnet's design. He determined that the key to creating a more powerful electromagnet was to increase the number of turns that the wire made around the core. Henry used a one-volt battery to create an electromagnet capable of lifting seven hundred fifty pounds. According to Henry himself (1857), this magnet "possessed magnetic power superior to that of any before known" (pp. 109). This was the first step in the realization of a nationwide communication system. Henry did not come up with the idea of the electromagnet by himself. As early as 1775, electricians had been experimenting with telecommunication. A German scientist named Johann Schweigger constructed a "multiplier," or multi-turn coil, which greatly increased the magnetic power of an electrical circuit (Hochfelder, 1998). Meanwhile, an English scientist named William Sturgeon developed the electromagnet. Sturgeon used only a few loosely wrapped, uninsulated wires to create a weak electromagnet. Henry found that by combining the ideas of Scweigger and Sturgeon he could create an electromagnet powerful enough to make a telegraph possible. He took Sturgeon's electromagnet and used many tightly wrapped coils of insulated wire. Henry published his findings in Benjamin Silliman's American Journal of Science in 1831. This was the first crucial step towards the creation of the telegraph.
