INTRODUCTION
This bibliography provides a handy list of some important, standard references on karst and cave geology. Most works are in English, and this is not an exhaustive bibliography on the subject; however, it serves as a key to works that in turn lead the researcher to additional material. The intent is to provide a selected list of primary sources to those who are relatively unfamiliar with karst research. This edition contains 124 citations and 6 journals. Listings such as this one are inherently biased due to the background of the persons who compile them. Undoubtably many worthy publications have not been placed on this list. For this, we apologize, and hope that the presented list will be of use to those who view it. The bibliography is arranged as follows:
  • Textbooks on karst and speleology Monographs that introduce the principles of karstic landform development, the origin of caves, and the geomorphic, hydrologic, and geochemical processes of karst. Emphasis is placed on texts originally written in the English language or on foreign language books translated into English.

    Introduction

    Web Sources

Karst can be loosely defined as a terrain with characteristic landforms which are the product of
    Evaluation of
solutional processes. Karsts can be found in virtually every part of the world and can even be found
    the sources
in the World Wide Web. This brief report contains information on and analysis of web resources
    which pertain to karst geomorphology.

    4. Geoindicators: Karst Activity
Ford, D.C. P.W.Williams 1989. karst geomorphology and hydrology.
    http://www.gcrio.org/geo/karst.html
NAME: Karst activity Karst can be either a sink or a source of CO , for the karst process is part of the global carbon cycle in which carbon is exchanged between the atmosphere, surface and underground water and carbonate minerals. Dissolution of carbonates, which is enhanced by the presence of acids in water, ties up carbon derived from the rock and from dissolved CO as aqueous HCO -. Deposition of dissolved carbonate minerals is accompanied - and usually triggered - by release of some of the carbon as CO . In many karst locations, CO emission is associated with the deposition of calcareous sinter (tufa, travertine) at the outlet of cold or warm springs. Though most abundant in humid regions, karst can also be found in arid terrains where H S in groundwater rising from reducing zones at depth oxidizes to produce sulphuric acid, which can form large caves, such as the Carlsbad Caverns of New Mexico. Similar processes also operate in humid regions but tend to be masked by the CO reaction. Sulphates and rock salt are rarely exposed in humid climates. They are susceptible to rapid dissolution during periodic rains where they are at the surface in drier terrains. SIGNIFICANCE: It is estimated that karst landscapes occupy up to 10% of the Earth's land surface, and that as much as a quarter of the world's population is supplied by karst water. The karst system is sensitive to many environmental factors. The presence and growth of caves may cause short-term problems, including bedrock collapse, disparities in well yields, poor groundwater quality because of lack of filtering action, instability of overlying soils, and difficulty in designing effective monitoring systems around waste facilities. Instability of karst surfaces leads annually to millions of dollars of damage to roads, buildings and other structures in North America alone. Radon levels in karst groundwater tend to be high in some regions, and underground solution conduits can distribute radon unevenly throughout a particular area.

This course will examine the role of running water on landscape evolution in general and karst development in particular. Course set-up There will be two lectures per week and you are expected to attend ALL classes and read the assigned readings BEFORE coming to class. Every week will start with a short (15 minute) quiz on the material discussed the previous week. There will be 13 quizzes of which the lowest three scores will be dropped. The final exam is a comprehensive exam and will cover all material discussed during classes and in the labs.
Labs Labs will start the week of August 27, 2001, and will be held every other week. However, I reserve the right to use some of the "free" lab time for lectures.

The Fourth International Conference on Geomorphology was held at the University of Bologna from the 28th August to the 3rd September 1997. The karst session was held in the afternoon of Monday September lst. It was an exceptionally successful meeting with some 100 participants representing all of the continents except Antarctica. The karst session commenced with a short lecture by the Chair titled Karst - State of the Art. The paper contained the latest developments in available techniques for measuring karst processes and the present state of understanding of processes in karst systems. It was illustrated by examples from the Chair's studies on the Nullarbor Karst, Australia The paper concluded that the detailed study and understanding of karst is now possible anywhere in the world. However the cost of the technology available for the study of karst has far outrun the money that most researchers have to spend on it.
The Chair's paper have been published in full in the Proceedings volume of The Fourth International Conference on Geomorphology, which appeared as T. 3 in Supplement III of the Journal Geografia Fisica e Dinamica Quaternaria. Then two oral plenary papers were presented. The first was titled Principal Features of Evaporite Karst in Canada was delivered by Derek Ford of Canada. It was a visual feast which illustrated the features develo ped on extensive evaporite karsts in Canada.

Kljuène besede: krasoslovje, geomorfologija krasa, zgodovina krasoslovja, Dinarski kras.
