Mammals and Reptiles Delaware Museum of Natural History Graduate Student Scholarships in Malacology The Curatorial and Research Division of the Delaware Museum of Natural History announces the availability of one graduate student scholarships in support of systematic research in Malacology. The $500 award will be used toward travel and lodging expenses for a student visiting DMNH to study our world-class systematic collections and library. Eligible students must be enrolled in a graduate degree-granting program and pursuing collections-based research leading to publication. Applicants should submit a succinct research proposal (not exceeding two pages) outlining the thesis project plus the work to be accomplished at DMNH, a brief CV, a budget, and one supporting letter from a faculty advisor. Application deadline is 15 March 2002. DMNH's extensive Mollusk Collection comprises more than 2 million specimens and 18,000 species from worldwide marine, land, and freshwater environments, including dry shells, alcohol-preserved specimens, and Cenozoic fossils. Approximately 7% of the collection is from the Philippines. It is one of the ten largest mollusk collections in the U.S. Important holdings include the Weaver-DuPont Volutidae, the Stanford University U.S. Unionidae (on permanent loan), and over 1,200 type lots. The DMNH Library (10,000 volumes) is one of the finest in classic systematic works in Malacology. Holdings include a number of rare pre-Linnean volumes (many on long-term loan from Wagner Free Institute of Science), as well as recent monographs, reprints, and journals.

Mammals and Reptiles Mollusk Department About The Mollusk Collection The mollusk collection at DMNH consists of more than 2 million mollusk specimens making it one of the top ten in the United States. The 210,000+ cataloged lots represent more than 17,000 species. Worldwide in scope, and covering all seven living classes of mollusks, our holdings comprise marine Gastropoda (50%), land and freshwater Gastropoda (25%), marine Bivalvia (15%) and freshwater Bivalvia (5%). DMNH has both dry and alcohol preserved specimens. Most specimens are Recent however, DMNH also has Cenozoic fossil material. Our type collection contains more than 1200 lots. Type catalogs listing all molluscan type specimens (except Pulmonata) are available in Nemouria issues 36 and 41. John E. du Pont's original shell collection as well as other acquisitions have increased the collection's size and scientific value. The DMNH collection continues to grow through research activities of staff and through donations of scientifically significant specimens. Research The Mollusk Department is looking forward to the arrival of Dr. Kevin Roe as the new Curator of Mollusks in 2003. Currently at St. Louis University, Dr. Roe's research focuses on North American freshwater mussels (family Unionidae). He is particularly interested in the systematics, biogeography and conservation biology of mussels. Dr. Roe uses DNA sequences and morphological characters to develop hypotheses for the evolutionary relationships of mussels and examine the evolution of reproductive features. He is currently investigating the relationships of the mussel genus

In this database is summary information of distribution, size, and classification of 4,300 species. Coupled with digital images this database will serve as a powerful tool for identifying species and gaining rapid information about their biology and distribution. These fossil shells on the left, from Ecuador, are about 3 million years old, and so lived at the time the Isthmus of Panama was forming. About 80% of the species are now extinct. Malacology The study of the molluscan animal and its habits Cypraea fimbriata Gmelin, 1791 Introduction - Malacology is the term which usually describes the present day study of the animals which are assigned (by mankind) to the phylum Mollusca . Many of these animals have shells (or shell-like plates) which are studied by individuals who are generally referred to as conchologists. If this were all that there was to the name-calling, people would get along fairly well. Unfortunately, it isn't. More will follow on names and their callings. Some researchers come to malacology naturally because they seek to understand the organism as it expresses itself in nature. Some come to it as an extension of their study of the shells of molluscs and some, it seems, embrace it as a refuge from the generally improved informational state of conchologists, amateur or advanced. The study of the animal which (often) produces a shell will lead to other branches of scientific endeavor. Genetics will be one of those branches. In marine molluscs, little more than speculation has occurred due to the necessity of the veligers to feed, and be fed upon, in the planktonic 'soup' of the ocean. An interesting trait of the cowry has been seen by this collector on many occasions. It was first observed in some live
