In Brief News
Spread of Active Sonar Threatens Whales
The U.S. Navy wants to flood the world's oceans and coastal waters with sonar technology that deafens and kills whales and other marine mammals. ACT NOW!

Protect whales and other marine life from dangerous Navy sonar.
SUPPORT OUR WORK!

Make a donation to NRDC. Around the globe, nations are testing and beginning to deploy "active sonar" technology, which uses extremely loud sound to detect submarines. The problem? Active sonar can injure and even kill marine mammals. It has been conclusively linked to the deaths of seven whales in the Bahamas in March 2000, and is thought to have caused a 1996 mass stranding of beaked whales on the west coast of Greece. The U.S. Navy has led the push toward use of active sonar. In full knowledge of the disastrous effects that active sonar's intense noise may have on whale populations all over the world, the Navy has also conducted testing in complete secrecy and has consistently evaded and violated environmental law. filed a lawsuit
The Bahamas Whale Deaths
Of the 13 beaked whales that stranded in the Bahamas in March 2000 after exposure to active sonar, seven died, including this one.

MERI Center Mission Statement Personnel Our Wish List ... Lecture Series Under Construction International Current News News Archives Career Opportunities ... Volunteer Opportunities The Marine Environmental Research Institute is a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to scientific research and education on the impacts of pollution on marine life, and to protecting the health and biodiversity of the marine environment for future generations. MERI accomplishes its goals through multidisciplinary ecotoxicological research, research dissemination, environmental education, and international programs. Through its program initiatives, MERI seeks to address the problems of pollution of the ocean environment, unsustainable coastal development, species and habitat degradation, and environmental emergencies (toxic spills, releases) affecting marine life. The world's oceans, while critical to life on earth, are barely understood, and at present, no international body monitors ocean pollution. Yet throughout the global marine environment, signs of ecologic deterioration are apparent: beach closings, red tides, and shellfish health advisories due to sewage contamination; infectious diseases in coral reefs, tumors in sea turtles, eggshell thinning and reproductive problems among fish-eating birds; infertility, cancer, and virus-related mortalities among marine mammals.

(Tursiops melaena) The Bottlenosed Dolphin is perhaps the most familiar of the sea mammals. Their gentle nature has endeared them in our hearts. These highly social animals have actually been known to rescue humans from danger. They are intelligent creatures with a brain that is much larger than ours. Atlantic Spotted Dolphin
(Stenella frontalis) The Atlantic Spotted Dolphin looks very similar to the bottlenosed dolphin except for the noticeable body spots. They are generally somewhat smaller than their cousins. As with all dolphins they travel in close family groups called pods. Pilot Whale
(Globicephala melaena) The Pilot Whale is a small member of the whale family, averaging about 10 feet in length. They are perhaps better known for the mass strandings in which entire pods of these animals will beach themselves in an apparent attempt at suicide. This behavior has yet to be explained.

You do the math: Does annually subtracting more than one million groundfish, the primary food source for the western population of Steller sea lions, add up to near extinction? Here's a hint: The western Steller population has dropped by almost 90% since the 1970s. more Sea Otters
Sea otters are the smallest of all marine mammals, but they have a big influence on coastal ecosystems. Because they restrict sea urchin populations, sea otters allow kelp forests to flourish. MARINE MAMMAL SCIENCE publishes significant new findings on marine mammals resulting from original research on their form and function, evolution, systematics, physiology, biochemistry, behaviour, population biology, life history, genetics, ecology and conservation. Range extensions, unusual observations of behaviour, and preliminary studies of a few individuals are published only where there is suffidient new information to render the manuscript of general interest. Low priority will be given to confirmatory investigations of local or regional interest. The Journal endorses the principle that experiments using live animals should be undertaken only for the purpose of advancing knowledge. Consideration should be given to the appropriateness of experimental procedures, species of animals used, and number of animals required. All animal experimentation reported in MARINE MAMMAL SCIENCE must be conducted in conformity with the relevant animal care codes of the country of origin. The Editor will refuse manuscripts in which evidence of adherence to such codes is not apparent.
