Our Activities The Bottlenose dolphin Project ... Contact us! A short presentation... The Leviathan Academy was founded in 1996 to promote and develop studies and researches for the knowledge and conservation of Marine Mammals, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea. The Academy continues the studies tradition and the activities of Marine Mammals Working Group, informally founded in 1990 in the Animal Biology Department of University of Rome. Researchers, graduates and students take part in the Academy; they produce many researches that are presented in scientific publications and international conferences. Many students have developed their thesis in the field of Academy researches and were able to realise their interests on Marine Mammal life. At the same time, the Academy organises many seminaries and conferences open to the public, publishes on daily news and periodics and allows voluntaries to take part at the researches. THE ACTIVITIES OF THE LEVIATHAN ACADEMY Projects Bottlenosed dolphin project The Bottlenose dolphins are the most studied dolphin in the world but, in spite of this, our knowledge about this dolphins are still insufficient; this is mainly because of the plasticity of this specie that is able to adapt to different local situations.

ONR programs are highly competitive; principal investigators are usually at a level of professional employment equivalent to a tenured associate professor or higher, with an active history of original research published in peer-reviewed open literature. Proposals for research outside the current topics of interest will be considered, but must be of exceptional scientific merit. Top Effects of Manmade Underwater Sound on Marine Mammals The primary sound sources of concern are Navy-relevant sound sources, including sonars and explosives, but research proposals that address other sources of manmade sound, including ship noise and research acoustics, will be considered. Marine mammals are the primary taxa of concern, but human divers, sea turtles and fish, are also of interest. Current research activities include investigations of hearing anatomy and function, field monitoring of behavioral response to manmade sound, tools for the assessment and mitigation of adverse impacts from manmade noise on the marine environment, and modeling and simulation tools for impact assessment and risk management.

Humans as Marine Mammals
This section will be devoted to the activities of the International Institute for the Advancement of Humans as Marine Mammals. Among other things, this organization is devoted to the adaption of the human to fully enjoy the ocean environment. In particular the organization encourages water advantaged people (such as paraplegics, the elderly, the sight and hearing handicapped, etc) to live in an environment where these special attributes may be of advantage. Take a look at the Official Charter of HAMM's . Articles for inclusion in this page and suggestions and comments should be sent to the Ancient Mariner;

WASHINGTON, DC— The Defense Department is asking for broad exemptions from environmental regulations in an expanded version of a bill that was defeated last year in the Senate.
The proposed legislation, introduced today by the White House, would give the military more discretion in activities that affect marine mammals and endangered species. In particular, the military is asking for exemptions from sections from the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which officials said would give needed flexibility to sonar and underwater bombing exercises.

Pacific Walrus The primary objective of the walrus program is to ensure that Pacific walrus in Alaska remain within an optimum sustainable population range and to assure that they continue to be a healthy, functioning component of the Bering and Chukchi seas ecosystems. The Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 provides the legal framework for most walrus management activities. Management responsibilities are outlined in the Conservation Plan for Pacific Walrus in Alaska, and include: international cooperation with Russia on walrus management issues, conducting population surveys, monitoring and modeling populations, monitoring harvest by Alaska Natives, developing habitat protection measures such as the development of guidelines to minimze incidental take for industrial operations in walrus habitat, and collaborating management and research programs at the local, state, national, and international levels. The Marine Mammals Management office takes an ecosystem approach to walrus management, carried out through the cooperative efforts of many partners. Some of these are the National Wildlife Refuges, the Eskimo Walrus Commission, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, National Marine Fisheries Service, and the University of Alaska. Select one of the areas below to learn more about the Pacific walrus and the Walrus program.
