Math Study Skills
Active Study vs. Passive Study
Be actively involved in managing the learning process, the mathematics and your study time:
  • Take responsibility for studying, recognizing what you do and don't know, and knowing how to get your Instructor to help you with what you don't know.
  • Attend class every day and take complete notes. Instructors formulate test questions based on material and examples covered in class as well as on those in the text.
  • Be an active participant in the classroom. Get ahead in the book; try to work some of the problems before they are covered in class. Anticipate what the Instructor's next step will be.
  • Ask questions in class! There are usually other students wanting to know the answers to the same questions you have.
  • Go to office hours and ask questions. The Instructor will be pleased to see that you are interested, and you will be actively helping yourself.

Research in the MCS Division at Argonne National Laboratory is funded principally by the Mathematical, Information, and Computational Sciences Division Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy Our mission is to increase scientific productivity in the 21st century by providing intellectual and technical leadership in the computing sciences computer science, applied computational mathematics, and computational science. Open Positions MCS and the UofChicago/Argonne National Laboratory Computation Institute have a variety of positions open for predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers, scientific programmers, graduate students, and undergraduates. Students should also check our Student Opportunities Web site. What's New Argonne's numerical components research makes DOE's top 10 list for 2002. Research in parallel components for PDEs and optimization was recently named as one of DOE's top 10 scientific achievements for 2002. The work involves development of components that are compliant with standards of the DOE-wide Common Component Architecture, using common abstract mathematical interfaces for parallel linear algebra. The work is detailed in "Parallel Components for PDEs and Optimization: Some Issues and Experiences," by B. Norris et al., Parallel Computing 28(12) (2002) pp. 1811-1831.

Professor Anthony Bloch has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers effective 1 January 2003. He has been elected on the basis of contributions to nonlinear dynamics and geometric control of physical systems. The IEEE Fellow is one of the most prestigious honors of the IEEE, and is bestowed upon a very limited number of Senior Members who have made outstanding contributions to the electrical and information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession. The number of IEEE Fellows elected in a year is no more than one-tenth percent of the total IEEE voting membership. This year 260 new Fellows were elected. Visit Bloch's website.

Circles of Light:
The Mathematics of Rainbows
How are rainbows formed? Why do they only occur when the sun is behind the observer? If the sun is low on the horizon, at what angle in the sky should we expect to see a rainbow? This lab helps to answer these and other questions by examining a mathematical model of light passing through a water droplet.
