Measurement is the process observing and recording the observations that are collected as part of a research effort. There are two major issues that will be considered here. First, you have to understand the fundamental ideas involved in measuring. Here we consider two of major measurement concepts. In Levels of Measurement , I explain the meaning of the four major levels of measurement: nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio. Then we move on to the reliability of measurement, including consideration of true score theory and a variety of reliability estimators. Second, you have to understand the different types of measures that you might use in social research. We consider four broad categories of measurements. Survey research includes the design and implementation of interviews and questionnaires. Scaling involves consideration of the major methods of developing and implementing a scale. Qualitative research provides an overview of the broad range of non-numerical measurement approaches. And

Hovemere , established in 1974, is a world leader in the development of high-performance opto-electronic systems capable of measuring atmospheric parameters. These include temperature, ozone densities and wind speed and direction, all of which contribute to studies of climate change. Hovemere has traditionally worked alongside the scientific community, involving itself in research and the development of novel instrumentation. Recent developments include products that are well suited to commercial applications such as improving Wind Farm efficiency. We are also working on instrumentation that can monitor and track gaseous and particle pollution emissions. Hovemere has access to a unique set of high-performance ground-based facilities. These facilities include a Mobile Doppler Wind Lidar System (wind speed and direction) and a Transportable Lidar System capable of measuring atmospheric temperature, density, and the concentrations of aerosol, ozone and water vapour. At the ALOMAR Observatory in Northern Norway, we have developed and demonstrated the capability to make daytime measurements with the Rayleigh and Ozone Lidar Systems.

45. Levels Of Measurement
The level of measurement refers to the relationship among the values that are assignedto the attributes for a variable. Why is Level of measurement Important?

Construct Validity Reliability [ Levels of Measurement ] Survey Research Scaling Qualitative Measures Unobtrusive Measures The level of measurement refers to the relationship among the values that are assigned to the attributes for a variable. What does that mean? Begin with the idea of the variable, in this example "party affiliation." That variable has a number of attributes. Let's assume that in this particular election context the only relevant attributes are "republican", "democrat", and "independent". For purposes of analyzing the results of this variable, we arbitrarily assign the values 1, 2 and 3 to the three attributes. The level of measurement describes the relationship among these three values. In this case, we simply are using the numbers as shorter placeholders for the lengthier text terms. We don't assume that higher values mean "more" of something and lower numbers signify "less". We don't assume the the value of 2 means that democrats are twice something that republicans are. We don't assume that republicans are in first place or have the highest priority just because they have the value of 1. In this case, we only use the values as a shorter name for the attribute. Here, we would describe the level of measurement as "nominal".

Ability: A characteristic indicative of an individual’s competence in a particular field. The word "ability" is frequently used interchangeably with aptitude, although many psychologists use "ability" to include what others term "aptitude" and "achievement." (See Aptitude
Academic Aptitude (See Scholastic Aptitude
Achievement/Ability Comparison (AAC): Stanford Achievement Test Series or the Metropolitan Achievement Tests and the scores of other students of similar ability as measured by the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test.
Age Norms: The distribution of test scores by age of test takers. For example, a norms table may be provided for 9 year olds. This age-norms table would present such information as the percentage of 9 year olds who score below each raw score on the test. (See Norms
Anecdotal Data:
Aptitude:
A combination of characteristics, whether native or acquired, that are indicative of an individual’s ability to learn or to develop proficiency in some particular area if appropriate education or training is provided. Aptitude tests include those of general academic (scholastic) ability; those of special abilities, such as verbal, numerical, mechanical, or musical; tests assessing "readiness" for learning; and tests that measure both ability and previous learning, and are used to predict future performance—usually in a specific field, such as foreign language, shorthand, or nursing.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT:
THE DATA WAREHOUSE SUPPORTS
BEST PRACTICES
Deborah Henderson - Ontario Hydro Services Company
The Performance Measurement Focus to leverage this critical business data in a complete business strategy. Performance monitoring and reporting to the business based critical success factors are the best insurance that the business is on track and reaching for value based growth. The delivery mechanism for information systems support of this is through the data warehouse (or data mart) appropriate operational and strategic performance measures. Corporate commitment to action must follow from the performance measures reports thorough feedback loops created to effect positive change. Effects of corrective action will then be reflected in performance measure improvements. As author Thomas S. Monson has said: When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported back, the rate of improvement accelerates. The Data Jungle Consider how many business analysts in a typical company work on various views of the corporate tracking and strategy. They often work in a spreadsheet environment and are always looking for the latest official numbers. Instead of building and reinforcing business operations, reports are dispersed and often duplicated through manual aggregations up the line organization, eroding information content in the data and thus inefficiently supporting the infrastructure it was collected to support. As in all data warehousing solutions, the problem of access to one set of "official record" data as well as dimensional and drill-down views of the information are addressed and directly address this problem.

What does an oscilloscope do?
An oscilloscope is easily the most useful instrument available for testing circuits because it allows you to see the signals at different points in the circuit. The best way of investigating an electronic system is to monitor signals at the input and output of each system block, checking that each block is operating as expected and is correctly linked to the next. With a little practice, you will be able to find and correct faults quickly and accurately. An oscilloscope is an impressive piece of kit:
The diagram shows a Hameg HM 203-6 oscilloscope, a popular instrument in UK schools. Your oscilloscope may look different but will have similar controls. Faced with an instrument like this, students typically respond either by twiddling every knob and pressing every button in sight, or by adopting a glazed expression. Neither approach is specially helpful. Following the systematic description below will give you a clear idea of what an oscilloscope is and what it can do.
