UniS Materials - building on strength UniS Materials Home / Metals and alloys Metals and alloys Contact: Professor Panos Tsakiropoulos Research on metals and alloys at the University of Surrey is done in the Physical and Process Metallurgy Research Group of the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering Academic staff: Professor Panos Tsakiropoulos Dr Mark Whiting Dr Guosheng Shao Improvements in the reliability of fabricated metallic materials require a better understanding of the fundamentals of processing and of phase transformations and the efficient use of energy and natural resources. Our research combines theoretical modelling and experimental studies of kinetic processes in metals and alloys relating to vapour-liquid, vapour–solid, liquid-solid and solid-solid phase transformations and the evolution of microstructure in metallic materials. A thorough investigation into the fine details of microstructures is obtained through the use of a variety of electron microscopy techniques, emphasizing transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our research seeks to establish the scientific underpinnings for metallurgical technologies that make efficient use of energy and natural resources in an environmentally sound manner. This spans engineering applications and the supportive fundamental science.

  • Recent and Current Research Projects The Metals and Alloys Group in H Division performs theoretical, computational and experimental condensed-matter and materials physics research in support of major Department of Energy and LLNL programs, including the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative ( ASCI ) within the Stockpile Stewardship Program, Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), and Basic Energy Sciences (BES) programs. This research includes fundamental quantum, atomistic and multiscale modeling and simulation of materials properties over wide ranges of temperature and pressure and can extend from bulk solids and liquids to defects, surfaces and interfaces to nanostructures. The major focus of the Group is on understanding and elaborating the structural, thermodynamic, defect and mechanical properties of metals and alloys.
    In the area of structural and thermodynamic properties, the Metals and Alloys Group studies both equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena and is concerned with the development and application of accurate multiphase equations of state, high-pressure structural phase diagrams and related materials data. Current forefront research in this area includes the development of advanced quantum-based methodologies for d- and f-electron metals, the study of rapid resolidification under high dynamic compression, and the treatment of f-electron correlation and volume-collapse phase transitions in rare-earth and actinide metals.

D. research scientists and 3 computer scientists working in the areas of theoretical, computational and experimental condensed-matter and materials physics. The work environment blends the collegial atmosphere of a major research university with the focus and resources of a large national laboratory. Research scientists are normally employed at one of three levels, depending on qualifications, programmatic need and funding availability. These levels are postdoctoral (tenure up to 3 years), flexible term (tenure up to 6 years), and career (indefinite tenure). It also supplies wire, rod and tubing. H. Cross Co. sells no product from stock; all its products are made to your exact specifications. This catalog is thus, of necessity, general in nature. History The word "tungsten" is an adaptation of the Swedish tung sten (heavy stone) and was first applied to the mineral scheelite about 1758. The element was first identified in 1781 by a Swedish chemist, K.W. Scheele, for whom the calcium tungstate mineral, scheelite, was later named. Commercially, tungsten is prepared from scheelite. Further processing results in a yellow powder of tungsten tri-oxides that would be considered extremely pure by most commercial standards. However, the desired properties of tungsten wire are affected so adversely by minute quantities of unwanted impurities that another purification is added. This consists of re-dissolving the hydroxide, purifying the solution, and crystallizing the tungsten out in the form of ammonium paratungstate. Back to Top Applications Tungsten is practically the only material used for electron emitters. Even though other more electropositive metals would have higher emission rates, the advantage of tungsten is its extremely low vapor pressure even at high temperatures.
