81. THEMIS Science Goals
To determine the mineralogy and petrology (rock types) of localized deposits associatedwith hydrothermal (eg, sites like Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming
http://themis.asu.edu/goals.html
In addition to its basic scientific goals, THEMIS infrared and visible images will be used to support landing site selection for the Mars Surveyor 2003 lander/rover and others beyond 2003. The specific objectives of THEMIS are:
  • To determine the mineralogy and petrology (rock types) of localized deposits associated with hydrothermal (e.g., sites like Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA) or sub-aqueous environments (e.g., dry lake beds), and to identifiy possible sample return sites likely to represent these environments. To provide a direct link to the global, hyperspectral mineral mapping from the Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) by utilizing the same infrared spectral region at high (100 meters) spatial resolution. To study small-scale geologic processes and landing site characteristics using morphologic and thermophysical properties (e.g., the shape of the landscape and its characteristics in terms of rocks, dust, sand, and "soil"). To search for temperature anomalies associated with active subsurface hydrothermal systems (e.g., heat coming from active volcanic areas, if present).

Mineralogy and Geochemistry of Kimberlites and Related Rocks from Finland (printed version published in the Proceedings of the 7th International Kimberlite Conference, 1999, p.625-636.) Hugh E. O'Brien and Matti Tyni Geological Survey of Finland, P.O. Box 96, FIN-02151 Espoo, Finland ABSTRACT Farther into the Karelian Craton occur dikes of carbonate-rich ultramafic lamprophyre (aillikite) and a rock which appears to have both olivine lamproite and Group II kimberlite affinities. The latter contains most of the typomorphic minerals of lamproite including phlogopite, K-richterite, low-Al diopside and has a major element composition equivalent to average olivine lamproite. Despite this the rock has tetraferriphlogopite zoning profiles and an accessory Ca-Zr silicate that differ from other reported lamproites and are in fact more typical of those seen in Group II kimberlites (orangeites). Keywords: kimberlite, lamproite, orangeite, aillikite, Finland, Nd-Sr isotopes, petrography, mineralogy, geochemistry. 1. INTRODUCTION
