North West Fungus Group
The North West Fungus Group (NWFG) was established in 1994 as a regional umbrella group to promote an interest in fungi in the Northwest of England and Wales, UK. We cover the counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside in England, and the vice-counties of Denbighshire and Flintshire (now part of Clwyd) in Wales. The main aims of the group are as follows:
  • To identify and record the fungi in the Northwest region. To promote an interest in fungi through forays, talks and workshops open to members of the Group and others with an interest in joining the Group. To promote an interest in fungi through talks given to natural history societies and the general public. To promote the conservation of fungi and of threatened habitats of rare fungi. To liaise with other relevant groups and active individuals in the Northwest.

We are affiliated to the British Mycological Society and produce two newsletters a year.

The ARSEF culture collection is the world's largest and most diverse collection of cultures for fungal pathogens of insects, mites, spiders, nematodes, and other invertebrates. This collection is an internationally recognized research resource providing clients around the world with cultures, identifications, and information on entomopathogenic fungi.
The collection currently comprises nearly 6000 isolates from more than 400 fungal taxa and ca. 930 diverse hosts, with isolates coming from every continent of the globe. ARSEF accessions of many taxa represent the only cultures of these fungi available anywhere. Such commonly encountered entomopathogens such as

Mycology is the branch of biology concerned with fungi . The Kingdom of Fungi is comparable in diversity, size and importance to the Plant and Animal kingdoms. Unlike plants and animals, however, most fungi are microscopic in size and cannot be viewed easily in their natural habitats. Because fungi cannot be observed directly, their biology must be inferred from accumulated evidence of their activities gathered by a variety of experimental and sampling methods. The Department of Botany of the University of Toronto has a long tradition in mycology stretching back to the beginning of the Twentieth Century. This tradition continues today with courses of study at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as in active research programs. Lab Pages Botany Home Page Faculty Profiles

    TEAM MISSION
The mission of the Forest Mycology Team is to provide a fundamental understanding of the biological and functional diversity of forest fungi and to develop and apply information gained in an ecosystem context to conserve the fungal resource and sustain the health and productivity of forest ecosystems. The team's research is divided into three problem areas: 1) Ecology, biology, and functional diversity of forest fungi. This area considers issues related to fungal taxonomy, systematics and phylogeny, understanding and documenting fungal communities in space and time, examining effects of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on the ecology of forest fungi, and exploring important ecosystem functions of forest fungi, particularly their roles in ecosystem resiliency and health.
