The Bedford Institute of Oceanography is Canada's largest center for ocean research and first major federal center devoted to oceanography. Four government departments, inhabiting its 40 acre campus, perform targeted research mandated by government or in partnership, advise on marine environments including fisheries and offshore hydocarbon resources, provide navigational charts for waters from Georges Bank to the Canadian Arctic, and respond to environmental emergencies.

S tellwagen Bank, an underwater plateau of sand just offshore of the Massachusetts coast, is one of New England's richest habitats; a place of high biodiversity ( see map here ). Much of our efforts at the Center have focussed on the waters of the Bank, whether through research, conservation or education. In appreciation, the Center began the process of listing Stellwagen Bank as a National Marine Sanctuary in 1992. This status heightens awareness and affords protection, not only to the individual inhabitants but, to the habitat as a whole.
Please use this guide to explore a new environment, as a means of answering some questions or, as a reference guide to the species or processes mentioned in other chapters of this site. One good way to learn about a new habitat is by looking at the physical process that formed and forms it. It may be a good idea to check out the section on oceanography . This will set the geographic and geologic stage for further explorations.
Where possible, we have organized this chapter by taxonomy, or groups of related species, but as you will soon realize, such distinctions in nature are not always apparent. Such groups may have nothing to do with ecology. Use the list or the graphic above, to start exploring. If you don't know what something is, click on it and find out!

Careers In Oceanography Table of Contents Inside the Front Cover Oceanographers apply the basic sciences to studies of the sea, its contents, and the surrounding environment. Often, they are chemists, physicists, biologists, or geologists who bring their special skills to ocean studies. They collaborate with one another and with engineers and social scientists on complex, challenging problems and issues as they expand our knowledge of the world ocean. They work in laboratories ashore, on ships and submersibles at sea, and in coastal environments. Learn more...

modified from Singer, 1921 About this time, however, observations of natural phenomena related to the seas and oceans began to be written down. Herodotus, around 450 BC, wrote of the regular tides in the Persian Gulf, the deposition of silt in the Nile Delta, and uses the term "Atlantic" for the first time to describe the western seas. In the fourth century, the Phocaean colonists of Massila (Marseilles), sent the Greek astronomer Pytheas on a voyage out of the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar), where he traveled to Britain, Germany, and the Baltic Sea. He describes conditions in a distant far northern sea, which may have been in the Arctic (he describes it as having a 24 hour day at the summer solstice), as thick and gelatinous like a jellyfish (these waters are at times thick with gelatinous organisms of various kinds).
" I found no basis prepared; no models to copy... Mine is the first step, and therefore a small one, though worked out with much thought and hard labor. It must be looked at as a first step and judged with indulgence."

WAFO. Wave Analysis for Fatigue and Oceanography
WAFO is a toolbox of Matlab routines for statistical analysis and simulation of random waves and random loads. The routines are collected in subdirectories according to application. Tools are provided for analysis of measured data with routines for estimation of parameters in statistical distributions, estimation of spectra, plotting in probability papers, etc. An important part of WAFO are routines for calculation of theoretical distributions of characteristic wave parameters from observed or theoretical power spectra of the sea. Another part is related to statistical analysis of fatigue. The theoretical density of rainflow cycles can be computed from parameters of random loads. Further, a collection of routines is included for modelling of switching loads (hidden Markov models). A special part of WAFO contains general statistical tools. A new philosophy concerning documentation is presented. The toolbox contains scripts for generation of plots in recent publications and scripts for comparison with results in the literature. Data sets from measurements of the sea surface are included. WAFO is developed for use with Matlab version 5.x/6.x. Some routines call programs written in Fortran. Versions for PC/Windows and Unix environments are available.
