OPERATIONS RESEARCH
Operations research (operational research in Britain) as understood today is essentially identical to systems analysis. Historically, it was a narrower area of activity that stressed quantitative methods and did not concern itself with TRADEOFFS between objectives and means or with problems of equity. It was defined by the Operational Research Society of Great Britain as follows (OPERATIONAL RESEARCH QUARTERLY, l3(3): 282, l962): Operational research is the attack of modern science on complex problems arising in the direction and management of large systems of men, machine s, materials and money in industry, business, government and defense. Its distinctive approach is to develop a scientific model of the system, incorporating measurements of factors such as change and risk , with which to predict and compare the outcomes of alternative decisions, strategies or controls. The purpose is to help management determine its policy and actions scientifically. (IIASA) (in Great Britain OPERATIONAL RESEARCH). Originally, the use of quantitative techniques in the domain of

The practice of the statistical arts goes back to antiquity. Historians of science can identify several large steps in the development. Perhaps the earliest is the effective census-taking begun in the 17th century. In the 18th and early 19th centuries several important contributions to the mathematical understanding of statistical regularity were made. Many of these developments revolved around the common games of chance. In the late 19th century the rise of the biological sciences, with masses of irregular data, gave a tremendous push to statistics, and the field began to take its present form. The ubiquitous computer of the late 20th century has provided the statistician with enough computing power to accomplish all the arithmetic required by the methodology. The emerging challenge for the field of statistics is the creative use of this new computing power. The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science holds the very popular annual Deming seminar on the teaching of statistics.

Doctoral Program in Operations Research FOCUS Operations research (OR) is the study of mathematical methods, usually implemented by computer programs, that can be used in solving managerial decision problems. GSIA's doctoral program in operations research is designed to encourage students to make contributions toward basic scientific knowledge in the area. This knowledge can take several forms: the derivations of fundamental results of an analytical or mathematical nature that lead to the development of algorithms for aiding decision-making; the development of new kinds of models appropriate for management science applications; or controlled experimentation which leads to empirical results that make efficiency comparisons possible among algorithms. Careful attention is also paid to obtaining knowledge of the substantive areas to which operations research can be applied, such as production, finance, marketing, or economics. A major goal of the program is to train students to recognize operations research problems in real-world situations, and to give them the opportunity to learn about the implementation of operations research models in one or more of these substantive areas. The basic operations research courses offered include: linear, nonlinear, integer, and dynamic programming; network and graph theory; convex analysis; and stochastic models. In most cases, each course is taught by a faculty member who is actively pursuing research in the subject area. Since classes are usually small, students frequently meet informally with their instructors. The third semester competence examination is based on the areas covered in these courses.

    Introduction
Operations research may be loosely described as the study of optimal resource allocation. Mathematically, this is the study of optimization. Depending on the options and constraints in the setting, this may involve linear programming, or quadratic-, convex-, integer-, or boolean-programming.
    History
Some links to the history of Operations Research can be found at the Military Operations Research Society and on J. E. Beasley 's home page.
    Applications and related fields
For numerical optimization techniques (conjugate gradient, simulated annealing, etc.) see 65, Numerical Analysis Discrete optimization problems (traveling salesman, etc.) are principally treated in Combinatorics The word "programming" in this context is essentially unrelated to computer programming; for that topic see Computer Science
