The Origin of the Periodic Table
I know what the periodic table looks like, but where did it come from? Whose idea was it to arrange the elements this way?
In 1869, a Russian chemist named Dmitri Mendeleev came up with a way of organizing the elements that were known at the time. He set them out in order of atomic weight , and then grouped them into rows and columns based on their chemical and physical properties.
1869...that's way before the , or even the Rutherford model
That's right. Mendeleev had no idea what atoms were made of or why they behaved as they did. Nevertheless, he was able to put together the periodic table almost as we know it todayexcept that some elements were missing, because they were unknown in 1869.
Based on the gaps in his table, Mendeleev even succeeded in predicting the existence and properties of several new elements.
That's pretty impressive. Can you tell me more about how Mendeleev organized the table? What kinds of properties did he use?
His basic rule was this: the elements in any column, or

This website came about because in early 2002, as a result of a misunderstanding while reading Uncle Tungsten by Oliver Sacks , I accidentally decided to build a Periodic Table. I won't bore you with the details here (see the Complete Pictorial History of the Wooden Periodic Table Table ), but once it was finished I felt obligated to start finding elements to go in it (because under the name of each element in my table there is a sample area).

Welcome to Mrs. Gibson's Periodic Table ADventure website! This website was created in accordance with the 8th grade chemistry curriculum at Princeton Community Middle School in Princeton, Indiana. This goal of this website is to introduce and explore basic chemistry concepts and to practice these concepts using engaging web-based research and activities. In the culminating activity, students will perform a WebQuest which requires them to research an element using the internet. Once students have researched their elements, students will develop and perform commercials for their elements. Last updated on 4/18/00 Thank you for visiting!
