The Pueblo of Sandia Petroglyph Project
by: Estella Tsethlikai and Domingo Otero
During July and August 1995 a group of six students from Sandia Pueblo worked on a project recording petroglyphs at Petroglyph National Monument, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The students in the group were Loren Gutierrez, Brandi Torivio, Rebecca Trujillo, Scott Paisano, Estella Tsethlikai and Domingo Otero. The project goal was to record all the rock art at Piedras Las Mercadas which is one of the many sites at Petroglyph Monument. The Monument is on the fast-growing west side of Albuquerque and is encroached upon and threatened by nearby housing developments. Our goal is also to record all petroglyphs systematically and thoroughly for inclusion in a computer database. The project is sponsored by The Chamisa Foundation of Santa Fe and the Pueblo of Sandia. The project coordinators are Henry Walt and John Brayer. Work began with an orientation which was held at the Sandia Pueblo Wellness Center on July 17. In the orientation the sudent crew learned how to use surveying equipment and how to survey. The crew also learned how to photograph rock art and how to fill out the field recording forms. There were four different forms that had to be filled out for each Pertoglyph. The next step was to go out to the field and begin the hard work. The first thing that they had to do was break up the site into different working units. Then the crew broke up into two groups of three, and started recording. One person took photographs, and the other two filled out forms.

Ancient Sightings Petroglyphs The United States is filled with pyramids, hieroglyphs, petroglyphs, artifacts and sacred grounds to rival Egypt. Tragically, we do not covet them as the National Treasures they really are. The Cultures who preceded our modern society recorded events and prophecies for the benefit of those who would follow. Their messages and divine creations are offered here for your interpretation. At the Ancient Ruins in West Central Idaho along the Snake River, the story of Beings that came from the Stars and a Galactic War was recorded according to Indian Legend well over 30,000 years ago. The petroglyphs depict the beings that came, their interaction with the inhabitants of the ancient city, and the war and destruction that ensued. We are shown their ships which are curiously triangular in shape. Similar to those that have been recently sighted over Colorado, Arizona and California. We are also shown the portal through which the Inter-dimensional Beings came. You will notice how these correlate with the Sacred Amulets entrusted to us that came from the Mississippi River Valley. JEFFERS PETROGLYPHS
Cottonwood County, Minnesota In the midst of a vast prairie in southwestern Minnesota massive ridges of very ancient rock rise up to lie just below the surface of the ground. On this watershed divide, among the tall grass, there are a few places where the underlying rock breaks through to the surface. Buried for millennia, the stone preserves evidence of ancient watercourses in the rippled surfaces of sand that were slowly solidified by heat and pressure. Gradually thrust to the surface and rough-polished by glacial ice, a "canvas" was created that became a medium for the signs and symbols of ancient American Indians. Imprinted in this scoured rock face are fleeting images that bear testimony to the generations of earlier inhabitants of this land. These forms are found carved in a score of locations, however one of these places surpasses all the rest by virtue of the abundance and diversity present there. This place is today known as the Jeffers Petroglyphs
Painting and engraving of rock are some of the oldest surviving forms of human expression.. This expression is a worldwide phenomenon with tens of thousands of sites on six continents. The images in different regions are distinctive with characteristic styles, subjects, and methods of execution. Rock art, a generic term used by researchers that is applied to rock engravings and rock paintings and drawings, is broadly described in two categories: 1) rock paintings and drawings, jointly referred to as

69. Carving The Cosmos
Astronomical analysis of petroglyphs on sandstone panels, Arizona.
http://www.viewzone.com/carving_cosmos.html
islandhills@cybertrails.com Across ocher and salmon colored sandstone a shadow crawls like a shallow pool of water flowing in slow motion. Its fuzzy penumbra gradually slides over the spiral petroglyph pecked into smooth rock. We know this movement is the result of the greater spinning of our planet in relation to a stationary sun. However, for the Hisatsinom (a.k.a. the Anasazi and the Sinagua), shadows were animate beings whose movements reflected those of the Underworld spirits. Conceptualized by the ancestral Hopi as supernatural "shades," these dusky revenants were imbued with a mysterious vitalism that imparted not only beauty in the eye of beholder but awe as well. Archaeoastronomer Ray A. Williamson has termed this phenomenon "hierophany," or sacred appearance (from the Greek words hieros , "sacred" and phaino , "to reveal or make appear.") [Ray A. Williamson, "Living the Sky: The Cosmos of the American Indian" (Norman, Oklahoma: University of Oklahoma Press, 1989, reprint 1987), p. 92.] We can imagine the members of the first village at Homolovi (settled circa A.D. 1260 near the present town of Winslow, Arizona) gathering before dawn on the summer solstice in an alcove-like enclosure of rock not far from their pueblo. Here they await the sacred interplay of shadow and sunlight. The main panel, which faces eastward, is created by a vertical sandstone fault about 25 feet long and 15 feet high. It is capped by an overhanging slab that extends horizontally about four feet to the east. Approximately 10 feet to the east is a round-topped boulder that forms the inner east wall of the enclosure and casts a curved shadow upon the main panel. Open to the south but blocked to the north by broken chunks of rock heaped higher than their heads, this enclosure protects the observers who sit cross-legged and close together on the ground, gazing in rapt attention at the primary grouping of petroglyphs on the main panel.

70. Petroglyphs By Jim Nollman
petroglyphs. The following is a brief look at some of the petroglyphs Jim Nollmanhas encountered that depict interactions between humans and other creatures.
http://greenmuseum.org/content/work_index/img_id-377__prev_size-0__artist_id-41_
These people were hunters. And they not only left us pictures, but also complete scenes of themselves in action. So what's this petroglyph from the Zalavruga site, on the southern coast of the White Sea, show us? Well for one thing, it may be the oldest picture in the world showing people skiing. It is also a hunt. The animal is a moose. This art becomes much more intriguing and complex when you look at it from their point of view. For instance, they were not only killing animals but also taking the body of one of their gods into themselves.
Here's a rubbing from a site discovered last year by two young Russian archeologists at the Kanozero site, located above the Arctic Circle. It shows a couple, the woman is pregant, the man is a hunter and clearly proud of his fertility.

This is a whale boat from Zalavruga on the White Sea. The people are carved in detail, which means they are distinguished as individuals. Each person onboard this boat would have recognized himself or herself from the glyph. I believe the second figure is likely a woman. Judge for yourself. Some people believe that this is the oldest picture of a whale in the entire world. 2000

The area is called Karelia. The Karelians were a Finnish/Hungarian race of people who originated in the Northern Urals, migrating into Western Russia in waves starting about 6000 years ago. From there, individual tribes scatter north. 2000

Ancient Carvings Leave Their Mark
By Dan Olson
May 28, 1999 RealAudio 3.0
Unique rock carvings attract thousands of visitors, archaelogists, and students. Tucked away in a small patch of southwestern Minnesota prairie is one of the state's enduring mysteries. Centuries ago people carved thousands of symbols into rocks near the small town of Jeffers. Who were they, and why did they painstakingly carve petroglyphs of animals and other figures? This summer archeologists will take another crack at answering the questions. But in the meantime, the site is becoming a hot spot for visitors interested in the carvings. THREE HOURS WEST AND SOUTH of the Twin Cities, there's an 80-acre patch of restored prairie called the Jeffers Petroglyph Site. There, a 300-yard-long crescent of red quartzite slices through the sod. The broad, flat rock sits at a low angle facing southwest. A nearly constant wind rustles the tall grass and rattles microphones at the rock's border. Rain from low clouds dots the blue denim jacket of Micheal Lucio as he walks on the crushed rock path to the petroglyphs.

TRACCE no. February 2000
Two enigmatic petroglyphs on Fuerteventura/Canary Islands
As a result of an one years research project in 1993/94 the author was able to document about 780 panels of rock art exclusively on Fuerteventura, one of the eastern islands of the Canarian Archipelago. Thus it was possible for the first time to examine the typology and frequency of motifs for a whole island. The most astonishing result was the nearly total absence of manifestations of human beings and animals. The linear signs are dominating, followed by geometric signs like pentagrams, circles or triangles. There even are a lot of iconic signs like footprints and ships, but not one drawing which clearly could be attributed to the subject of human beings, inclusively of aspects of their environment (dwellings, weapons etc.). This result is quite astonishing if one compares with the rock art of adjoining regions like Northern Africa or the Iberian Peninsula. Two of the documented panels are totally off the beaten track and have no similarity among the others, even not in comparison with the rock art of all the Canary Islands. So: What’s your opinion about these two enigmatic petroglyphs? Does anybody know comparable motifs in other rock art areas?

This web site is void of many graphics and dazzle because when I had time to develope a web site I had a P.O.S. computer. Now that I have a nice computer and plenty of website developing programs and personal knowlege of flash, dreamweaver, and any graphics program you can imagine, I have no time in which to devote to making something as frivilous as a website. Actually, my graphic design cirriculum leaves me with this nasty feeling at the pit of my stomach when I think of spending free time in front of my computer. So far I have 5 sections for you to check out. Hopefully I'll be revising my poetry pages with some new material soon. The Sleepless section is updated on a sort of regular basis. PETROGLYPH PULLOUT
THE FREMONT CULTURE
The Fremont people lived throughout Utah and adjacent areas of Idaho, Colorado and Nevada from 700 to 1300 AD. The culture was named for the Fremont River and its valley in which many of the first Fremont sites were discovered. The Fremont were a Puebloid group who had strong cultural affiliations with their better-known contemporaries, the Anasazi. While the Anasazi built cliff dwellings, the Fremont often lived in pit houses (dug into the ground and covered with a brush roof), wickiups (brush and log huts) and natural rockshelters. Their social structure was composed of small, loosely organized bands consisting of several families. They were closely tied to nature and were flexible, diverse and adaptive often making changes in their lifeways as social or environmental changes occured.
Diet
The Fremont maintained a hunting and gathering lifestyle and supplemented their diet by farming; growing corn, beans and squash along the river bottoms. Edible native plants included pinyon nuts, rice grass and a variety of berries, nuts, bulbs, and tubers. Corn was ground into meal on a stone surface (metate) using a hand-held grinding stone (mano.) Food was stored in pottery jars or baskets inside small masonary structures, called granaries, which were tucked under small overhangs on narrow ledges. Deer, bighorn sheep, rabbits, birds, fish and rodents were hunted using snares, nets, fishhooks, bow and arrow, and the atlatl or throwing stick.

Petroglyphs of the Volcanic Tablelands: Bishop, California Story by Jeffrey O'Brien. All comments or questions are welcome. Getting Started: Visit the Cultural Center of the Paiute - Shoshone reservation on West Line Street before you head off to the sites. The museum offers excellent informative displays featuring the history of the occupation of these tribes in the Owens Valley. In 1997, there were approximately 2,000 Native Americans living on the Bishop Reservation. Taking a few minutes to learn in more detail about the creators of these petroglyphs will enhance your experience in the field. The local descendants of the Paiute - Shoshone decline to share detailed information regarding the meanings or functions of the rock art. Sadly, their reluctance to offer information about the exact location of the various sites is justified. On some occasions people have behaved destructively and disrespectfully. If you are genuinely interested in rediscovering the sites, you will find them.
