Thanks to Arthur Bebak (arthur@msm.com) for the idea... * It has been brought to my attention that PI is not really all that "big", per se 4 being given as an example of a number bigger than PI. I could argue that PI is bigger than an infinite number of numbers (-5 for example) but, in truth, that is kinda wimpy and misleading. It turns out that when I was thinking "big" I was thinking of all the space that was used when writing PI down. The stack of papers required to write down PI is much bigger than the stack to write down 1 million. All that said doesn't take away the fact that there was actual confusion regarding the statement of PI being a big number therefore, you should ignore that I called PI the big number that begins with three and instead consider PI to be the really long number that begins with three.

A little known verse of the Bible reads And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it about. (I Kings 7, 23) The same verse can be found in II Chronicles 4, 2. It occurs in a list of specifications for the great temple of Solomon, built around 950 BC and its interest here is that it gives p = 3. Not a very accurate value of course and not even very accurate in its day, for the Egyptian and Mesopotamian values of = 3.125 and 10 = 3.162 have been traced to much earlier dates: though in defence of Solomon's craftsmen it should be noted that the item being described seems to have been a very large brass casting, where a high degree of geometrical precision is neither possible nor necessary. There are some interpretations of this which lead to a much better value. The fact that the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle is constant has been known for so long that it is quite untraceable. The earliest values of p including the 'Biblical' value of 3, were almost certainly found by measurement. In the Egyptian

INTRODUCTION:
WELCOME to the Mathematics Home Page. The concept of , an irrational number, has been calculated and explored throughout history from biblical times to the present. The Chinese calculated and their value was used for a thousand years. One mathematician calculated to 35 places and had it inscribed on his epitaph. With the advent of the computer, has been calculated to over six billion decimal places. Whether it is of historical significance, mathematical importance or a personal goal, has universal appeal. We would like to thank the following people for their kindnesses and expertise: Umesh Thakkar, coordinator of the Resource for Science Education Program (RSE); Lisa Bievenue, principal investigator for the RSE project; Elaine Schulte, RSE research assistant; David Atkins; Trista Lawless; Jim Peterson; Pam Van Walleghen; Kristen Bokenkamp; Deborah Foertsch; Jerry Glynn; Kathleen Smith for the use of her clever hyperstack and Larry Riddle, Chairman of the Mathematics Department at Agnes Scott College, Decatur, Georgia, for allowing us to modify his design to create our Mathematics logo. Thank you, also, to the RSE speakers. They have given us much to think about and our project has benefited from their presentations.

35. Phi Kappa Pi Fraternity
Official Homepage for Canada's only National Fraternity
http://www.total.net/~flatline/pkp/
W HAT IS A F RATERNITY A fraternity is a brotherhood. This implies that the basis of union existing among its members is the closest tie which can bind men to one another. In a sense, a fraternity creates a family among its members. Its aim is to bring together in intimate association a comparatively small group of university students who will be congenial, loyal and helpful to one another during their university years and, so far as circumstances will permit, throughout their lives. A fraternity chapter offers its members the nearest possible equivalent to home which may be found on a university campus. Granting that men may often carelessly disregard this obligation - to make of their chapter house a real home - this is nevertheless the objective of every chapter of Phi Kappa Pi Fraternity. T he spirit of comradeship within the fraternity creates friendships which often bind men together for life. Brotherhood, comradeship, friendship: these are the gifts within the reach of the new man who is ready, able and willing for them to prove himself worthy of them. T here is no time for a narrow viewpoint and a petty selfishness among the men of a fraternity chapter. There is no place for morbid self-pity within a chapter house. Fraternity membership, bringing men in close contact with one another, assures an interplay of ideas and an exchange of experiences, which break down a man's tendency to think of himself as alone. One finds friendly 'razzing' ever present. Praise and blame follow one another in rapid succession. The man who perchance once considered himself alone grows more thoughtful of the rights and wishes of those about him.
