Email Webmaster Space Plasma Physics Group leader: Prof. Göran Marklund The research programme is characterized by an intense international collaboration and by a fruitful interaction between space experiments and theoretical research. Space experiments, with instruments developed for in situ measurements of electric fields, magnetic fields, density and temperature, are carried out through participation on rocket and satellite missions within the NASA and ESA programmes, and within the Swedish national programme. To date the group has participated on more than 25 sounding rocket experiments and half a dozen satellite missions such as the successful Swedish Viking, Freja and Astrid-2 satellites. The current space instrumentation and research programme includes participation on the three ESA missions Cluster, Rosetta, and SMART-1. Future projects where we have an interest to participate include MMS, BepiColombo, and Solar Orbiter.

Plasma physics utilizes classical mechanics, electromagnetic theory and statistical physics. A plasma is a gas of charged particles (generally electrons and various ions) which interact with both externally applied electromagnetic fields and with fields they themselves generate. This interaction differentiates the behavior of plasmas from that of the more familiar gases. Plasmas are of great physical interest for a number of reasons. Most of the matter in the universe is in the plasma state (e.g. stars, the interplanetary and interstellar media are all plasmas), and they are a potential source of energy. Deep in the core of stars hydrogen is fused into helium releasing huge amounts of energy. One long-term goal of plasma research is to replicate this process in the laboratory. There are two basic approaches to this problem: magnetic confinement and inertial confinement. In magnetic confinement schemes high temperature (T~108K) and high density (n~1014 particles/cm3) plasmas must be confined for a sufficient length of time (~1 sec) to initiate controlled thermo- nuclear fusion. Inertial confinement schemes attempt to initiate fusion burns by imploding fuel pellets using high power lasers or particle beams. Since charged particles are influenced by fields they themselves generate plasmas are inherently nonlinear. The understanding of nonlinear phenomena has undergone rapid advance in the last ten to twenty years. New discoveries, such as solitons and chaos, the development of new mathematical techniques for the study of nonlinear systems, and the introduction of supercomputers have all contributed to this revolutionary progress. Many of these developments have been significantly advanced by the study of plasma physics.

    The Plasma Physics Laboratory at the University of Saskatchewan was established in 1959 and early experimental work centred around the study of electron acceleration in a Plasma Betatron. These early experiments led to the study of plasma turbulence and some of the earliest work in turbulent heating in toroidal geometry. Successful experiments in toroidal turbulent heating led to the construction of STOR-1M, Canada's first tokamak (completed in 1983) and was soon followed by a larger tokamak, STOR-M (completed in 1987). Both machines are used to study problems in controlled fusion dealing with turbulent heating, AC tokamak operation, plasma biasing, and anomalous transport. Basic plasma physics is also studied in a double plasma device (DPD) which allows the investigation of plasmas free of the influence of magnetic fields. Recently, research on plasma based material synthesis has been initiated. High quality diamond grains and carbon nanotubes have been synthesized in plasma reactors.

Reflection nebulae are not glowing plasmas but are visible because of light from nearby bright stars scattering off of dust particles. The nearby star or stars are not hot enough to cause ionization in the gas of the nebula but are bright enough to give sufficient scattering to make the dust visible. Since wavelengths in the blue are scattered more readily than red, reflection nebula tend to have a blue shading. (This is the same scattering process that gives us blue skies and red sunsets.) Among the nicest of the reflection nebulae are those surrounding the stars of the Pleiades. A blue reflection nebula can also be seen in the same area of the sky as the Trifid Nebula On to the Planetary Nebula Page

    The National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) is an innovative magnetic fusion device that was constructed by the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) in collaboration with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Columbia University, and the University of Washington at Seattle. First plasma was obtained on NSTX on Friday, February 12, at 6:06 p.m. NSTX will be used to study the physics principles of spherically shaped plasmas hot ionized gases in which nuclear fusion will occur under the appropriate conditions of temperature, density, and confinement in a magnetic field. Fusion is the energy source of the Sun and all the stars. Scientists believe it can provide an inexhaustible, safe, and environmentally attractive source of energy on earth. Magnetic fusion experiments use plasmas comprised of one or more of the isotopes of hydrogen. For example, in 1994, PPPL's Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) produced a world-record 10.7 million watts of fusion power from a plasma comprised of equal parts of deuterium and tritium, the fuel mix likely to be used in commercial fusion power reactors. NSTX is a "proof of principle" experiment and therefore will employ deuterium plasmas only. If successful it will be followed by similar devices, eventually including a demonstration power reactor, burning deuterium-tritium fuel. NSTX will produce a plasma that is shaped like a sphere with a hole through its center, different from the "donut" shaped plasmas of conventional tokamaks like TFTR. This innovative plasma configuration may have several advantages, a major one being the ability to confine a higher plasma pressure for a given magnetic field strength. Since the amount of fusion power produced is proportional to the square of the plasma pressure, the use of spherically shaped plasmas could allow the development of smaller, more economical fusion reactors. NSTX's attractiveness may be further enhanced by its ability to produce a high "bootstrap" electric current. This self-driven internal plasma current would significantly reduce the power requirements of externally driven plasma currents required to heat and confine the plasma.

    1 Feb 2001 Cluster II enters operations phase! 10 August 2000 The second pair of Cluster spacecraft, Tango and Rumba, were successfully launched on 9 August. The first two , Samba and Salsa had already launched successfully on 16 July. To date everything has gone perfectly, and all four are now in their correct final orbits. We will shortly begin commissioning instruments, and expect to be returning full science data by Christmas. here is the the Latest News and some Links. 1 June 2000 IMAGE first light pictures have now been released Press Release 12 December 1999 D-CIXS Confirmed!
