Welcome to EcoShield Environmental System's Pollution Prevention Home Page Your Single Source for Solutions and Answers to All your Environmental Problems EcoShield's new line of Aqueous Cleaning Regeneration Systems are truly innovative , converting oil, grease, and other organic contaminants in degreasing solutions into soap, right in the cleaning process . This reduces waste production and prevents pollution at the source , extends cleaner bath life, conserves water and often generates a better cleaner than what you started with originally. EcoShield is also introducing a line of novel process control technologies for aqueous and semi-aqueous cleaning processes. These new process control systems represent a quantum leap in cleaning process control for industry. By using highly sensitive, low cost sensors that can measure various cleaning, phosphating, plating and rinse process parameters it is now possible to lower operating process temperatures and chemical concentrations of baths that are normally operated at higher values due to the batch process control nature of most current cleaning methods. Lower operating temperatures and concentrations result in significant energy savings and reduce our consumption of limited natural resources. Visit our process control page for more details on these systems and what they can do for your cleaning process.

Governor George V. Voinovich
The Governor's Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Pollution Prevention have been presented since 1986. Ball Metal Container Group was one of five recipients to receive the Award in 1993. Governor George V. Voinovich presented the seventh annual awards on December 9, 1993 . These awards recognize outstanding commitment to improve Ohio's environment through pollution prevention. Evaluation criteria for the awards included: the overall effort to reduce waste at the source, recycle or recover materials, or conserve energy; soundness of approach; cost-effectiveness; ability of the program to serve as a model for others; and effectiveness in promoting prevention as the preferred long-term approach.

http://www.ssc.nasa.gov/environmental/wastemngmnt/pollution/polluprv.html
The SSC Pollution Prevention Plan describes methods to prevent or reduce pollution for NASA and its contractors. Three important aspects of Pollution Prevention (P2) include waste minimization, material substitution, and use of recycled products. Whenever possible, pollution will be eliminated or reduced at the source through process changes and material substitution. Wastes that are generated will be recycled whenever possible. Wastes that cannot be prevented or recycled will be disposed of in a way that is protective of human health and the environment.
NASA is always looking for recycling opportunities, and along with the entire resident agency and contractor population at SSC has established an aggressive recycling program. This program includes recycling over twenty- five materials, including various home-generated wastes. The table explains how to dispose of or recycle waste, and who to contact for waste disposal. Non-hazardous solid waste disposal at
Stennis Space Center

It is NASA's goal to maximize the quantity of materials recycled and minimize the quantity of solid waste sent to our site landfill. The success of our recycling program depends upon the availability of markets for secondary materials, so buy and use products with recycled content whenever possible.

http://www.hanford.gov/polprev/wmin.html
The program is designed to satisfy DOE requirements, executive orders, and state and federal regulations and requirements. In accordance with sound environmental management, preventing pollution through source reduction is the first priority in this program; the second priority is environmentally safe recycling. Waste treatment to reduce quantity, toxicity, or mobility (or a combination of these) will be considered only when prevention and recycling are not possible or practical. Disposal to the environment is the last option. Overall responsibility for the Hanford Site Pollution Prevention Program resides with DOE Richland Operations Office. The office defines overall program requirements that each prime contractor is responsible for meeting. Pollution Prevention Outreach and Public Involvement is implemented by each contractor by communicating waste minimization successes and information to employees and the community through outreach. Public involvement of each contractor will help to establish public confidence and trust, increase awareness of environmental issues, and promote the reduction of waste. Hanford Site contractors are encouraged to participate in the organizing of activities such as Earth Day and the local schools' Ambassadors program and to publish information externally to help increase awareness and public trust. Public and stakeholder participation should also be sought for projects and program elements to encourage community involvement and to develop a broad base of input and understanding of relevant pollution prevention issues.

Pollution Prevention (P2)
What is Pollution Prevention?
Like a water faucet that can be turned off thereby preventing water from pouring out, pollution prevention is the act of turning off the flow of waste before it enters the environment. Simply put, pollution prevention is doing things in your village like: "The Three R's": REDUCING the amount of things you purchase that will become waste, like detergent bottles and plastic shopping bags. REUSING the things you purchased before you throw it away, like juice jugs or water bottles. RECYCLING the things you purchase, like beverage cans and tires. Pollution Prevention starts with education Pollution Prevention education does not mean attending classes or seminars it could be as simple as just speaking with the people in your village and showing them alternative products that they can use. If people know that there are alternatives to disposable products and that the reusable products are cheaper in the long run then people will often switch to the reusable products. Compact fluorescent light bulbs, for example, last about 7 times longer than regular light bulbs and only use a quarter of the electricity. In many remote villages in Alaska where electricity is expensive, just
