In addition, the Division is responsible for the non-coal surface mining program and illegal coal mining under the Tennessee Coal Surface Mining Law of 1980, as amended. Under the Water Quality Control Act, municipal, industrial and other discharges of wastewater must obtain a permit from the Division. Approximately, 1,700 permits have been issued under the federally delegated National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). These permits establish pollution control and monitoring requirements based on protection of designated uses through implementation of water quality standards and other applicable state and federal rules. General Resources Earth's Water
Earth is the "watery planet". Viewed from space it is predominantly blue, as 74 % of its surface is covered by water. Oceans contain 97 % of the earth's water while the remaining 3 % is classified as freshwater. Seventy-seven percent of this surface freshwater is stored as ice and 22% as groundwater and soil moisture. The remaining freshwater, making up less than 1 % of the world total, is contained in lakes, rivers and wetlands.
Q and Answers About Water

We've put together a list of questions and answers about water that hopefully you will find interesting and amusing. Things like, "Is salt water used for anything in the U.S.?," and, "How can we have a 100-year flood two years in a row?"
Freshwater Ecology

Ecology is the study of plants, animals and their environments and how all of these affect each other. Glossary of Water Related Terms Use this glossary to look up words found on the Yarra Valley Water World Wide Web Site. For example, the definition of zooplankton can be found by clicking on the letter Z Click on the letter to return to the top of this glossary.

The Water Cycle The Water Cycle You may be familiar with how water is always cycling around, through, and above the Earth, continually changing from liquid water to water vapor to ice. One way to envision the water cycle is to follow a drip of water around as it moves on its way. I could really begin this story anywhere along the cycle, but I think the ocean is the best place to start, since that is where most of Earth's water is.

Welcome
Did you know that there's no such thing as NEW water? That's right! Every drop of water that has ever been on this planet has been recycled from day one! In fact, you could be drinking the same water that dinosaurs drank millions of years ago! But the water YOU are drinking has been recycled and purified. Water is such an important natural resource that takes everyone's part to preserve, cleanse, and protect it so that we will have clean water now and forever. How important is it? VERY! No human, animal, insect, nor plant can survive without it! We invite you to become an active participant in the continuous and conscious fight for clean, safe waters in Indiana and around the globe.
Safety Surveys Available
The IWEA Safety Committee encourages every wastewater plant to complete and return the annual safety survey. The information is used to help plan seminars and safety events that address current safety problems. In addition, plants that want to compete for safety awards msut complete the survey in order to be inspected. These inspections are valuable, since they are undertaken by volunteers who provide good feedback on how to improve plant safety.

Admission Funding for Graduate Study Program Introduction Faculty Labs Jobs The goal of the Environmental Health Technology program is to address the public health aspects and environmental issues associated with air pollution, drinking water, wastewaters, food protection, and solid and hazardous wastes.
Faculty research areas include air and water pollution monitoring; ambient, indoor, and personal exposure modeling; developing instruments, biomarkers, and methods for collecting, analyzing, and assessing the effects of physical, chemical, and biological factors; waste water treatment; and environmental risk evaluations. In this interdisciplinary program, students learn technical and management skills to function effectively in leadership roles in the community. The knowledge obtained from the program curriculum is brought into focus by a student research project and internship that culminates in a thesis. Graduates from this program are employed by environmental protection agencies at the federal or state level of government, public health agencies at the state or local level, or by environmental consulting firms.
