Population Studies
The Population Studies Center carries out demographic analyses, and helps track general economic and social trends. Center staff assess a broad span of issues. Among the most pressing in the 1990s are:
  • The impact of increasing numbers of immigrants on the U.S. economy and society. Researchers look at immigrants integration into society and government efforts to stem illegal immigration.
  • The changing composition of families as divorce, nonmarital childbearing, and female employment patterns shift. Researchers study policies to prevent unintended pregnancies and inform debates over affirmative action by investigating the relative access of minorities to employment, housing, and government contracts.
One important focus, within the context of fertility and family planning, is the behavior of adolescent men and program initiatives to include them in family planning. Another is changing trends in the well-being of low-income children and families as federal welfare reform shifts social program responsibilities to states and localities. Population Studies
Overview
The Population Studies Center studies how the U.S. population is growing and changing in response to shifts in the economy, the changing roles of men and women in families, and new policy initiatives. Our current research focuses in particular on immigration, mortality, sexual and reproductive health, adolescent risk behavior, child care and child welfare. In 2000, the center:
  • Completed a survey of 3400 immigration households in New York and Los Angeles. The survey will provide in depth information on the economic mobility and health of immigrant families and their well-being in the wake of welfare reform's far -reaching restrictions on immigrant benefits. The survey represents the a major new source of information on the immigrant population in the United States during a period in which national integration policies are changing. Published three major reports that provide new information to policy makers and program administrators about youth risk behaviors. Published 5 new reports on child care arrangements and costs in the U.S. based on the Urban Institute's 1997 National Survey of America's Families. These reports provide the first-ever analyses of state level child care data for multiple states. They document for the first time the enormous differences in child care patterns from state to state. This has made an important contribution to our understanding of child care, the importance of doing state or local analyses of these data, and of the limitations of national data for state and local use.

    Introduction and Activities
The University of Zimbabwe's Centre for Population Studies (CPS) was established in 1989, originally as a unit within the Department of Sociology. The Centre has become increasingly interdisciplinary over time, drawing students from Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Public Health, Social Work and Statistics. The energy and intellectual curiosity of the Centre's researchers, fostered by the strong research environment and leavened by their interaction with visitors and students at all levels, is a major source of Centre momentum.

    Overview
The RAND Fellows in Population Studies and the Study of Aging program enables outstanding junior scholars in demographic and aging research to sharpen their analytic skills, learn to communicate research results effectively, and advance their research agendae. Housed within the Labor and Population Program , the program blends formal and informal training and extensive collaboration with distinguished researchers in a variety of disciplines. In a typical year, the program will accept one fellow per year in Population Studies and one fellow per year in the Study of Aging. Fellowships are for one year, renewable for a second. Each fellow receives a yearly stipend of $38,250 to $50,000, depending on qualifications. Fellows must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and must have completed a Ph.D. (or its equivalent) in a relevant discipline before they begin the program. The RAND Fellows program is open to new scholars in the field of demographic and aging research, as well as individuals who already have research experience on these topics. For example, in some cases, fellows are on leave from an academic position so they can engage in research and writing full time, and extend their research agenda and funding base.
