The Cancer and Population Studies group investigates the webs of causal factors and circumstances that result in chronic conditions, especially certain cancers. Common skin cancers, to which Australians are especially prone, are the focus of several projects. We are continuing the follow-up of the 1300 residents of the township of Nambour who were participants in the Nambour Skin Cancer Prevention Trial (1992-1996), a field trial of sunscreen use and/or beta-carotene supplementation to prevent basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), solar keratoses and photoageing. We are also studying the occurrence of BCC and SCC in relation to the participants’ diets in the previous years with collaborators from the University of Queensland. A separate study investigating the relationship between human papilloma virus (HPV), cutaneous SCC and benign solar keratoses is being undertaken in treatment clinics in Brisbane, in collaboration with colleagues in The Netherlands. A major focus of the group continues to be the causes and prevention of melanoma using different approaches ranging from molecular epidemiological studies to a trial of prevention of the major risk factor, melanocytic naevi, in early childhood.

CPSE Home Diabetes Clearing House Staff NORTHWEST Health SERCIS ... CPSE Publications Centre for Population Studies in Epidemiology - Core business The Centre for Population Studies’ core business is the monitoring and surveillance of population health and related issues. Information obtained from population health surveys is used to inform policy, programs and health services that will promote the health and well being of the South Australian population. Over the last decade the Centre has earned an international reputation for its core business and makes significant contributions to global developments in monitoring of population health. Why are we in the monitoring and surveillance business? The new pattern of disease that is emerging around the world is increasing the prevalence of chronic disease. This is accompanied by a demographic shift to an older population with increasing urbanisation. The changing health pattern associated with these demographic changes is staggering in its implications. It points to the fact that large numbers of the population will suffer their chronic disease in old age and place powerful demands on the health system. Most chronic conditions are determined by socio-behavioural risk factors and social determinants, and it is the need to understand these etiologies and develop appropriate health system responses that drives the need for population monitoring and surveillance systems.

Observations From Long-term Population Studies in Switzerland
The following remarks are not the result of a major scientific research project, but are based on some long-term studies of amphibian populations which I have conducted over several years. The longest of these studies has involved counting egg clumps of Rana temporaria near the river Aare in the vicinity of Berne for 26 years. The mean total number of egg clumps per year is 625, but there is very high annual variation (370-1180). A decrease in the number of spawn clumps was observed between 1983 and 1987 and again between 1988 and 1992. If I had started my studies in the years 1983 or 1988, I would have been convinced after 5 years that the population was near extinction; in reality, it is stable. Similar observations have been made over a 20 year period in two fens of about 250m2 with much larger populations of Rana temporaria . In both fens, vegetational succession was offset by creating a new pond of half a hectare surface area. At one site, 'Bermoos', we observed very large fluctuations (between 1100 and 9200 egg clumps) with a decrease between 1980 and 1986 and again between 1988 and 1993. At 'Widi', annual variation has been smaller (550-2500 clumps), with a slight tendency of long-term decrease. At 'Widi' there seems to have been a real decrease over the last 6 years. Since 1982, Phragmites , which was not previously present, is spreading, mainly in the former best breeding sites. Both fens suffer from excessive inflows of nutrients; both are bordered on three sides by intensive agricultural land, with no buffer zone.

The Academic Program
Population Studies (PPST) is an interdisciplinary graduate certificate program whose faculty come from University of Hawai‘i departments in the College of Social Sciences and the Department of Public Health, from the Program on Population, East-West Center, and from the Department of Health, State of Hawai‘i. The Population Studies Program serves both independent graduate study and degree candidates in other University units who wish to understand population processes and to develop special competence in applying the concepts and tools of demography and of their discipline to the study of human populations. The program focuses on the links between population processes and their variable contexts (historical, environmental, cultural, social, economic, and political) in the contemporary world, especially Asia and the Pacific, as well as on the concepts and tools of demographic analysis.

Population Studies
The University offers a variety of units in which population is an important component. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of Population Studies, these units are taught in several Departments. Coherent programs of study above 200 level in Population Studies have been approved and are listed as PPL01-07 in the Schedule of Undergraduate Programs . Demography, being the scientific study of human populations, provides the core component for all these programs and it should be taken together with other units relevant to the student's area of interest. In addition, there are coherent studies and majors in Demography: see DEM01-05 and in the Schedule of Undergraduate Programs Next page: Women's Studies and Gender and Sexuality http://handbook.mq.edu.au/

Note: Timetable entries for papers can be obtained by clicking on the icon beside the paper's code. Demography is concerned with the empirical analysis of population structure and trends, and population studies interrelates these with social, economic, environmental, cultural, biomedical and other factors. An important element is the application to social, economic environment and other areas of policy formulation and monitoring. An appreciation of the techniques of demographic research and analysis is essential to the study of both methodology and substantive issues.
The Population Studies Programme co-ordinates the undergraduate programme in Population Studies and the graduate subject of Demography for the BSocSc(Hons) and MSocSc degrees.
Population Studies
Population Studies may be taken as a supporting subject for the BA or BSocSc degrees. This programme of study complements and supports other papers in the University which are concerned with population, by providing training in core concepts, methods and issues. Students taking Population Studies as a supporting subject must include POPS201 in their degree programme. Students interested in this programme should consult the Population Studies Programme staff. Further information may also be obtained from the Chairpersons of the particular departments which teach the papers.

The program in Population Studies prepares undergraduate students for jobs requiring demographic skills or for entering graduate programs in related areas. The program is not a major in itself. It requires 15 semester hours of coursework, some of which may satisify other University and major requirements. Applications of demographic analysis to the problems of human ecology are illustrated in the preparation of state and local population estimates, support of city and regional planning, and execution of environmental impact analysis, as well as in academic study of communities and organizational change. Required Courses 1. Conceptual introduction to demography (SOCIOL 261 Population Studies or equivalent).
