Evolutionary psychology is an evolutionary approach to human nature. Attachment Theory is also grounded in certain evolutionary ideas, and Behavior Genetics is a field concerned with that all-important evolutionary mechanism, the gene.
    Evolutionary Psychology and Sociobiology
One author summed up the basic idea of evolutionary psychology this way: "A person is only a gene's way of making another gene" (Konner, 1985, p. 48). Sociobiology (of which evolutionary psychology is a subfield that particularly concerns humans) can be thought of as having, like any research program , a "hard core" of problem solving strategies that provide possible answers to vexing research questions, and a "protective belt" of promising research questions to be addressed by providing actual answers to these questions. The protective belt structures our ignorance by identifying research questions that must be addressed if the research program is to advance. Whereas the actual answers that arise from the protective belt may be wrong, the hard core (by methodological fiat) is never wrongany potential negative evidence is to be blamed on faulty auxiliary assumptions rather than on the theory itself. Sociobiology can be thought of as a special case of the adaptationist program , which assumes that all phenotypic features (or characters) of contemporary organisms result from the fact that these features allowed the organisms' predecessors to produce more offspring in a prehistoric environment (Lewontin, 1979). "Narrow sociobiology" is defined as the study of evolution and of function, and chiefly applies to non-human animals in which cultural transmission is not an important variable intervening between possible and actual explanations (Kitcher, 1988). The hard core of narrow sociobiology includes the following laws or problem solving strategies, the basics of evolutionary theory:

The Psychology of Ideal Body Image
as an Oppressive Force
in the Lives of Women
by Barbara A. Cohen, Ph.D.
Note: Originally published in 1984. This article is presented in 6 parts. Part One Back to Publications page e-mail Next section Abstract
Fat oppression doesn't just affect fat people or fat women. It really works to keep everyone in line. Fear of fat is rampant in our society and is responsible for the current masochistic race toward a slender body image. We are a culture nearly addicted to individual control and the notion seems to exist in our society that fatness means a loss of self-control - which is considered the ultimate moral failure in our culture, and perhaps the most frightening of all fears. Statement of the Problem
Everyone is born into a culture - a set of shared ideas about the nature of reality, the nature of right and wrong, evaluation of what is good and desirable, and the nature of good and desirable versus the bad and non-desirable. (Richardson, Taylor, 1983) The definition of desirable, with regard to body image, has spanned rotund to emaciated, with various ideals in-between. And, the methods for achieving the desirable, idealized image of the times have been equally as varied.

Scientific research is a public venture. Therefore, one of the essential skills of the scientist is to be able to communicate ideas and research results effectively. This hypertext guide is an attempt to make the style of writing used in the field of psychology clear to you. It summarizes a lot of the material available in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (4-th edition) (1995) and is oriented toward undergraduate students. For example, it includes numerous hints to avoid common mistakes students make. Note the examples appear in a teletype font to distinguish them from the normal text. Finally, the document is organized in an outline format for at least two reasons. First, it should make it easier for students to quickly locate the information they seek. Second, it should make it easier for an instructor to grade students papers. In most cases, the student can simply be referred to the outline item that addresses the problem rather than writing the comment repeatedly on multiple papers.

Stephen Lerman, Centre for Mathematics Education, South Bank University. An attempt to outline a research programme for mathematics education which is firmly based in cultural, discursive psychology.

A MOMENT IN THE ZOOM OF A LENS: TOWARDS A DISCURSIVE PSYCHOLOGY OF MATHEMATICS TEACHING AND LEARNING Stephen Lerman Centre for Mathematics Education South Bank University London, UK Abstract Psychology has undergone considerable changes in the last decade or so, in line with developments in cultural studies, feminist research, postmodernism etc. In mathematics education research one can see the evidence of such developments, albeit as yet in a limited way. In publications over the last few years I have argued the case for a cultural psychology and for a move away from constructivism. In this paper I attempt to outline a research programme for mathematics education which is firmly based in cultural, discursive psychology. I discuss theoretical issues, refer to some of the important literature, and present some research in aspects of the programme. (1) Traditional psychology, for all that its field of study is human behaviour, has offered little that can help to improve society. modern psychology has been incapable of making serious contributions to Third World ( sic In the process of individualizing its view of students, it (mathematics education) has lost any serious sense of the social structures and the race, gender and class relations that form these individuals. Furthermore, it is then unable to situate areas such as mathematics education in a wider, social context that includes larger programs for democratic education and a more democratic society.
