QUATERNARY STUDIES  Spring 2003 LITHIC SOURCING Scope: An interdisciplinary geoarchaeology graduate course focused on: (1) methods, problems and successes of determining provenance of artifacts (i.e. the geologic-geographic location, site, or mine that is the origin of the raw material) and (2) the inferred human  behavior, including lithic procurement, raw material exchange, tool production, use, and discard, as illustrated through archaeological case studies. The geology component will cover how the rocks are formed and examine the methods of determining major element and trace element compositions, isotopes, diagnostic minerals or mineral assemblages, microfossils, geophysical parameters and in some locations, dating. The archaeological component will examine the application of lithic sourcing technologies to research questions of prehistoric behavior.  Specifically, we will look at ways in which prehistoric peoples obtained lithic materials, produced stone tools, and exchanged raw material or finished products.  We will also briefly explore more complex questions regarding economy, territoriality, ideology, and decision-making processes. Finally, we will explore the utility of dating technologies for lithic materials from archaeological contexts. International Development Studies Why study Quaternary Studiesat Chester? The Quaternary period encompasses the last 2.5 million years (a mere 0.05% of Earth's history). During this time, Earth has been beset by Ice Age conditions, with near-permanent ice caps at the poles, and regular cold glacial periods lasting up to 150,000 years, when up to one-third of the globe (most of Britain included) has been covered by extensive ice sheets. The last of these glacial phases ended only 10,000 years ago, as Earth entered the Holocene epoch, the most recent unit of geological time. While the climatic and environmental upheavals associated with the onset of the Holocene sounded the death knell for hundreds of animal species (e.g. the woolly mammoth and sabre-tooth tiger), they also paved the way for the rapid expansion of Homo sapiens across Earth's surface, and for the subsequent rise of human civilisation.
