These pages are a joint effort between John Hollister of Texas, USA and John Fowler of South Australia. Both of us have many years experience as avocational herpers. Over the years both of us have kept many species of herps and have taken many pictures.
Most of the pictures are supplied by John Fowler, the pages were designed and built by John Hollister. Many of the pages are/will be written by us. Help wanted! If you feel qualified to write up a species that is not yet done or have pictures to contribute, please go here to see what we are looking for in the way of help.
Many herpers dream of going to Oz to see their amazing reptiles but will never get the chance to do so. Finding good pictures and information on Australian herps is a tedious chore; we hope to make this chore a lot easier by providing as much basic information and as many pictures as we can on one site. We want to make this the only stop necessary for Australian reptiles and reptile links.
Our thanks and credits to others have contributed to making these pages the ULTIMATE Australian reptile site.

Mesozoic Marine Monsters of the Mangahouanga ....and elsewhere In New Zealand Last updated February 4, 2002 a nd a likewise remarkable history. This web-site will disappoint those visitors whom identify themselves as dinosaur enthusiasts, but if you have interests in these terrestrial reptiles we would recommend John Long’s excellent book, for which bibliographical information may be found in the "Suggested Reading List". Rather than repeat other background information in my web-site about Mesozoic marine reptiles, please make use of the links to web-sites provided – they come with our personal recommendations! All of the photographs in this site have been kindly provided by Joan Wiffen, New Zealand’s "Dinosaur Woman", and it is to her that the New Zealand’s modern renaissance in Cretaceous vertebrate palaeontology is founded, and largely continues. We are extremely grateful to both Joan, and John Long, whose mosasaur diagrams illustrate this web-site also, for their permission to use their material. John’s book is listed in the suggested reading. The term reptile is loosely defined in everyday English to mean scaly, cold-blooded, egg-laying animals. In cladistics (a way of classifying life forms), the reptiles are more strictly defined and include the descendants of the most recent common ancestor of the turtles, lepidosaurs (lizards, snakes, tuataras), and archosaurs (crocodilians, dinosaurs, and birds). The maintenance of body temperature (cold- vs. warm-blooded) is not a factor in this classification, but skull and egg structure are. Some Reptilian Extremes

Sea snakes (Laticaudinae and Hydrophiinae)
Characteristics of marine snakes
There are about 50 species of sea snakes. Sea snakes are very venomous, bur not very aggressive. An average sized snake can produce 10-15 milligrams of venom. The fatal dose for humans is 1.5 milligrams! Illustration shows the hollow teeth of he sea snake. Sea snakes can grow to over 2 meters length. They have a small blunt head, scales and a flattened tail.
Ecology and range of marine snakes
Sea snakes of the family Hydrophidae range through the tropical Indo-Pacific area. They prefer coastal reefs. There is also a pelagic sea snake (Pelamis platurus) that lives in open sea, sometimes hundreds of kilometers from the nearest land!
Behavior of marine snakes
Sea snakes feed mainly on fishes. Some of them are active hunters that probe crevices and holes for prey. Sea snakes are airbreathers and must periodically swim to the surface to gulp air. Most sea snakes are viviparous (young are born fully developed). Some sea snakes like the banded sea krait come ashore to lay eggs.
