XENARTHRA Family MEGALONYCHIDAE
West Indian Sloths and Two-toed Tree Sloths
Geographic Distribution This family includes a single living genus Choloepus, with the two species of two-toed tree sloths of Central and South America and at least three genera and three species of sloths that evidently survived in the West Indies until about the time of the European invasion of the Americas. About seven other genera of West Indian sloths have been described ( Anderson 1984), and they are sometimes said to have become extinct around the end of the Pleistocene, but P. S. Martin 1984) suggested that they did not disappear until after the arrival of people in the West Indies, starting about 5,000 years ago. Choloepus traditionally was placed together with Bradypus in the family Bradypodidae, but available evidence now suggests that these two tree sloth genera represent convergent surviving lines from separate ancestral stocks that also gave rise to two different groups of ground sloths. Choloepus

XENARTHRA Family BRADYPODIDAE; Genus BRADYPUS
Linnaeus, 1758
Three-toed Tree Sloths
Geographic Distribution The single known genus, Bradypus, contains two subgenera and three species ( Wetzel a Wetzel and Kock subgenus Bradypus Linnaeus, 1758
  • B. variegatus, Honduras to northern Argentina;
  • B. tridactylus, southern Venezuela, the Guianas, northern Brazil;
subgenus Scaeopus Peters, 1864
  • B. torquatus, coastal forests of eastern Brazil.
Paula Couto 1979) considered Scaeopus to be a full genus. Head and body length is 413-700 mm, tail length is 20-90 mm, and adult weight is 2.25-5.50 kg. The pelage consists of long overhairs of thick diameter that are grooved longitudinally and short underfur of fine texture. Most hairs point downward when the animal is hanging beneath a branch. Thus, most of the hairs are directed opposite to the hairs of most other mammals. The general coloration is grayish brown, slightly darker on the head and face, while on the shoulders there is usually a light area with brown markings. Frequently, the coloration appears to be greenish because of algal growth on the coat. B. torquatus

Why don't I see the sloths move around much?
Sloths spend most of their timewhether it's sleeping, eating, mating, or even giving birthhanging upside down from the limbs of trees with the help of their large, hooked claws. Their body temperature is low, ranging from about 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the air temperature and the animal's activity. This, along with the ability to sleep up to 15 hours a day, helps the sloth conserve energy. A sloth's blood pressure also is quite low, enabling it to survive wounds that would kill another animal. A sloth remains in one tree, feasting on leaves, buds, twigs and fruit, and moves on only when the food supply is depleted. Then it slowly moves through the branches to a neighboring tree. Digestion, like everything else, is a very slow process for sloths. A meal of hard-to-digest leaves may take up to six days to pass through the sloth's body (in contrast to eight hours for a human). About once a week, this animal descends from the trees to urinate and defecate. Because the sloth's limbs are more adapted to hanging than to supporting its body, it spends little time on the ground and returns to the safety of the trees as soon as it can. Back to I Wonder

It belonged to one of several groups of herbivorous mammals that lived only in South America. The Toxodon-animal had a broad, flat head and nose, eyes and ears were located high on the skull. The Wonderful World of Sloths Sloths are such interesting creatures with some amazing ways of living. Facts
    • Sloths spend most of their time upside down. They eat, sleep, mate and give birth upside down. When they do go on the ground, either to switch trees or to defecate (usually once a week), they crawl or pull themselves along, as although they can stand, they cannot walk very well. However, they are very good swimmers. Sloths sleep around 15 hours per day and may take up to a month to digest a meal. Sloths are brown or grey in colour and during the wet season are often covered in a blue/green algae. They are quite well camouflaged which is a helpful defence for something so slow. Their sharp claws are also a form of defence. There are two types of sloths - two-toed and three-toed. There are several differences between them, but since this is not a scientific description of them I won't go into it ! They usually live around 10-20 years in their native habitat in trees in the rain forests of Central and South America. In captivity they may live up to 30 or 40 years. Female sloths produce one baby a year, and the newborn is about 25cm long and 350g in weight. It will stay with it's mother for about 5 weeks.

    Shasta Ground Sloth
    Evolving from the tree sloths in South America, ground sloths are very distantly related to anteaters and armadillos. As this animal adapted from a tree dweller to being ground-based, its limbs still showed a relationship to its ancestors. Typically, ground sloths walked on the sides of their hind feet and the backs of their forefeet.
    Harlan's ground sloth was the largest and most common of the ground sloths found at Rancho La Brea. It stood over six feet tall and weighed almost

    Members of this order consist of the two and three toed sloth, the American anteater, and the armadillos. All members of this order are found in South, Central, and Southern North America. The nine-banded armadillo is the only member of this order in the United States. These animals are primarily insectivores and herbivores . While currently moderately sized animals, in the past members of this order approached the size of elephants. The forefoot of most animals in this order has five digits though usually just two or three are prominent. These usually have long, sharp claws. This order was until recently referred to as Edentata but that is now being used for some toothless or near toothless extinct animals which may or may not be related.

    TWO-TOED SLOTH
    Megalonychidae
    How slow are sloths? Sloths hardly move. They sleep 20 hours out of the day. When it does move, a sloth is so slow it would take 1 month to travel about 1 km. It rarely moves more than 40m in a day. It even eats slowly, pulling leaves and branches towards its mouth in slow motion.
    Why are sloths slow? To avoid predators: Birds of prey, its main predator, look out for sudden movements. So a sloth in slow motion will not register as prey. This is also why most sloths are active only at dusk or at night; most birds of prey don't have good night vision. A sloth can move quickly if it needs to, but it can't keep this up for long. VITAL STATISTICS
